I just got off the phone with Roger...

We were laughing how some fans didn't think he was serious about his
'11th Wimbledon preference' & he was just saying that to take pressure
off himself lol : )

He said to set the record straight he'll make another statement when he
wins FO - to the effect now maybe everyone will leave him alone & let
him concentarte on winning more Wimbledons.....

Whisper, ask your pal Fed to explain why winning a slam on clay is less than
1/10th as significant as winning again on the surface that bests suits him.

Thanks for conferencing me in. How come you are not mentioning Roger
telling you to stop posting crap on rst? He said several times (without
laughing): "Whisper, the rule is to think first!"

Perhaps Hops can post the transcript of that telephone conversation?

That's the reason he made that '11th Wimbledon preference' comment - he
was sick of the retardo posts in this ng....

I've read other Federer interviews and he's diplomatic to a fault.

It's probably an accurate quote, it's just being mis-read. Fed is obviously
using reverse-psychology to take the pressure off. He knows career GS is
worth far more legacy-wise than career-bumrooting at
Wimbledon...............

I am certain he would take Wimbledon this year over FO.

that's not the issue. he'd take winning the FO once in his career - this
year or some other year - over winning this year's W. Or next year's.

but this year would be better, otherwise what is now a small monkey on his
back will grow to gorilla-size and he'll end up like lendl/sampras, chasing
an uncatchable ghost.....

It's clear nothing comes close to Wimbledon for him - he's not going to
lie & say FO is just as big, or he'd swap a Wimbledon just to complete a
set.....

If I'm forced to think of 'Wimbledon' & 'bum-rooting' at Wimbledon, the
closest I'll concede is Hewitt at Wim '02. Agassi had a pretty good
grasscourt game & actually shed his br status when he played there....

Yes, 3 in a row is extremely rare & would bracket his name with
Sampras/Borg/Perry.....

Would he rather be bracketted with those names, or Agassi with CS...?

No, I don't believe a classy guy like Federer would say he'd win an> 11th Wimbledon rather than a first French Open.

But if Guga said the same thing about FO you'd agree?

Don't be stupid - Wimbledon is far more precious than FO. Just because
it's part of a 'set' doesn't mean he's dumb enough to swap. Would you
swap a $100 bill with $1 just to complete a set?

Fed knows a career slam won't guarantee him tier 2 status, let alone tier 1.

The shortest path to tier 1 is many Wimbledon titles, + few other slams
as sidedish...

Perry - yes. Sampras - not just yet. Borg - hmm... I think he would
rather have to equal his achievement. Each next straight W is a tougher
step to take, that's why I'd refrain from bracketing them all together as>2 straight W winners.
Would he rather be bracketted with those names, or Agassi with CS...?

The answer's obvious, but gathering the CGS this year would make him stand
out by a mile above the rest of the crowd as soon as Andre retires. In
fact, it might give him quite a lot of comfort, psychologically and, who
knows - even contribute to another FO title...
