LOL- What is John Mcenroe doing on the list? he was anything but a good sportsman. even today on the senior tour John is still unsportsman like in matches.

Earth to Whisper - the clue is in the name of the award - "Sportsman of the Year". Not career, not decade, year.
And anyway, the main reason Sampras doesn't appear on the list of winners is probably the award is a relatively new one and wasn't around for the peak years of his career.

It was but Sampras' record/year just was not convincing enough (it is a lot more difficult in tennis to prove yourself to the not-experts-at-all group who decides these things...
