Doubt it. After all Mac had his difficult times with Lendl during his prime (81-83) and managed to lose Connors Wimb 82 and lost to Wilander practically everytime 82-83. 84 was just magnificent year when rare players were able to distrurb Mac....

I think the writing was on the wall. In Mac's eyes Borg was his only opponent, & his main ambition was to beat Borg at FO - just to prove he's better than him everywhere.
Mac was only going to get better, & the '84 period woulda lasted several yrs had Borg hung around.
When he quit he felt like he was in a B-grade comp with Lendl/Jimbo & couldn't get motivated again. He gave us '84 just to show what he was capable of....
I find this the biggest tragedy in modern times - much sadder than Seles getting stabbed...

Agree though Borg pausing 81 early year-spring and his final quitting 82-83 were on same level.
Though I think Mac really wanted to revenge FO 84....85 SF was no shame but Wilander was too great that day...
