This was announced about a week ago -- and rumoured before that.
Now if only the Houston web site would actually post result....

Ouch! That should be a poke in the eye to the doubles purists out there
Not really. The poke in the eye came when the ATP allowed players to use their singles rankings to gain admission into doubles.
Who are they playing, and what's the occasion?
They are playing Garcia and Horna, and the occasion is doubtless a very large appearance fee.
Roddick is playing, too -- and he's going against Blake and Fish. Nice of the Draw Gods to do that to the organizers. Nyah nyah....

How odd. Given that Courier was involved, I thought it might have been an exhibition in connection with the actual tournament.
I can't really get too irate about the rankings issue. I don't follow doubles, but I would definitely watch Agassi - Courier, and the regular doubles guys probably don't have to worry that this will be an on-going thing that deprives them of their livelihood, even if it seems a little unfair. It might bring some much needed attention to doubles in general, and that can really only benefit them.

Kournikova brought a lot of attention to tennis, but has it really helped> tennis in the longer term?
Absolutely. Kournikova was great for tennis. Lots of people who weren't normally into tennis would have gotten interested due to her, and some would have stuck with it even after she was gone. Of course the effect would have been more obvious while she was around, and it's up to other players and the WTA to keep people interested once they have their attention. Doubles will have a much tougher time doing that, as they don't really have a very impressive product.

Oddly enough they never played doubles before in an official tournament. Courier played with Sampras 10 times back in early days 1990-92.

Shame, but not entirely unexpected. It would have been nice for them to have won a couple of rounds, but I suppose it gives Agassi a bit of practice on the clay before he starts his singles campaign. -- Luke Croll ABDK FAQ: http://home.earthlink.net/~abdk-faq/faq.htm
