I recorded the match live. easy 1st set. Federer was crusing fine in the 2nd until he served for the match. Gonzalez went for broke. broke Federer. since then Federer's forehand started to go wild. and it continued in the tiebreak. the 3rd set looks close by the score. but Federer won it pretty easily by holding serve better then Gonzalez. he stopped missing forehand shots. an the rest is history.

Sounds to me like his recent pattern of playing just well enough to match> the opponent... Anyone actually watch the match?>

Spot on. The 3rd set Fed was holding serve at love while Gonzalez struggled.

The first set Fed was cruising. In the second set the match got tighter Federer play some of the greatest backhand down the line I have seen him played to break Gonzalez, Gonzalez was playing great tennis himself even when he was broken at 4:3. I agree that Gonzalez went for everything in 5:3 game and in the tie break it was one of the few occassion that a player overpower Federer on his forehand and Gonzalez did that on a few points.

Federed wasn't at all happy at losing the second set, Why would he risk losing by " playing just well enough to match the opponent "?

Yep. Fed served for it in the second, agreed to replay a ball on match point, got broken and then ended up losing the tiebreak. Fed was hitting some beautiful shots, but Gonzalez was hitting the ball incredibly hard. Just amazing at times.
In the third set, I definitely thought that there was the chance of an upset. Fed appeared calm, but he seemed to be having a few difficulties. All of a sudden, though, he went up a gear, broke and then the match was pretty much over.

I don't think he's doing it by *choice*. It may be his usual mindset (Sampras was like that. And I had a stretch where I would play well enough to just barely lose, no matter how good the opponent. It happens), or he may be either tired or a bit burnt out. I haven't seen enough of him to know why it happens, but I have watched him doing it repeatedly since the Australian Open.
