Now that Capriati is out, I was wondering who among the Top10 players
has been in the Top10 for the longest time. I mean, Serena and Venus in
2004 were out for many weeks, whereas Kuznetsova, Sharapova, Molik and
Zvonareva joined the Top10 in the last months, so I guess it has to
be... Mauresmo?

Sure, make me work.

Davenport has been Top Ten continuously since January 11, 2003.
Mauresmo since July 7, 2002
Dementieva since September 8, 2003
Myskina since May 26, 2003

The others all became Top Ten well after that.

So, yes, Mauresmo.

So, yes, Mauresmo.

Thank you Robert :)

This means Mauresmo re-joined the Top10 less than 3 years ago.. it looks
like ages ago when players like MN, Graf, Seles, Sanchez, Sabatini,
Martinez or even Hingis used to spend most of their "peak years" in the
Top10... I guess we have to blame all the injuries :(

Most of it. Though, in the case of the Williams Sisters, they
might have stayed Top Ten despite the injuries if they'd played
more when healthy.

The other thing is, we have a very weak Top Ten right now.
So these players are more likely to slip in and out anyway.
If anyone really started to take charge -- as Graf and Navratilova
and Seles and even Hingis did -- they would be more likely to
stay Top Ten for extended periods.

Last week you commented that Sharapova was close to clinching a Year-End
Championship spot. I presume the same now applies to Davenport.

I wonder whether Davenport intends to play the whole year. Since she's
been doing so well lately I haven't heard any retirement talk.

i'm not sure that i fully agree with this statement. overall, i would
say that the top ten is not very weak; there is more parity, but what
is missing is an undisputed top tier of players. so right now, the top
10 is weak at the top. but aside from molik and zvonareva, i would not
expect these players to slip in and out of the top 10. i would expect
that two of the current top players, mentioned above, will slip out of
the top 10 since i fully expect that clijsters and henin-hardenne will
get back into the top 10.

i'm not sure that either of them are really what you would call "close"
to clinching a spot. but given how early in the year it is, they are
close enough to say that for all intents and purposes they are "in" as
far as the year-end championships is concerned...barring injury.

davenport still isn't winning grand slam tournaments, and that is her
real concern. the reason why she was talking about retirement was
largely because she didn't feel that she had a good shot at winning a
grand slam because certain players (at the time they were serena, venus,
henin-hardenne, and clijsters) were defeating her predictably.

I think the fact that she's been healthy has even more to do with
it. She feels good about playing (though I worry about her knee).

Davenport, until fairly recently, said she wanted to start a family
by age 30. My feeling (I have no evidence for this) is that she's
playing for another Slam, and if she wins one, will at least
announce her retirement at the time. She might even retire on the
spot.

Which obviously means we won't know until Wimbledon. :-)
And probably not then.

I thought we'd already had this argument. Yes, she has. 20%
more. I wasn't giving divisor scores. But in fact Davenport is
on pace to play more than 17 events this year, which means that
some of her points wouldn't count. Except that Davenport probably
won't play again until Strasbourg.

If anyone cares, the number of events played by the noteworthy
players so far is:

Asagoe 9
Bovina 4
Capriati 0
