Edberg bt Cash 6-3 6-4 3-6 5-7 6-3. Another 6 to Edberg and a 4 to Cash for playing Edberg so hard and defeating Lendl in four sets in the semi. Lendl gets a 2.
1987 FO
Lendl bt Wilander 7-5 6-2 3-6 7-6. Not vintage Lendl so he only gets a 6, conceding 6 sets and 99 games, although he did beat some claycourt talent on the way, like Nystrom, Gomez, Mecir, and Wilander. Wilander was the favourite, in fact, having blitzed the opposition in Rome and looking in better form than Lendl up to the Final. He gets a 4. Becker and Mecir, the losing semi-finalists get 1 apiece.
1987 W
Cash bt Lendl 7-6 6-2 7-5. It must've been awfully frustrating for Lendl, because this was the second year in a row he ran into a player firmly in the Zone on W Final Day. Cash played a glorious match against an in-form Lendl, constantly dipping returns at Ivan's feet, serving and volleying brilliantly, and moving as fast as anybody in the game. He gets a 7, Lendl a 4 (he'd downed Leconte in three and Edberg in four to make it through). Connors (the other semi-finalist) and Edberg get 1 each. Connors had earlier made one of the great comebacks against Mikael Pernfors, coming from 1-6 1-6 1-4 to win! Mac didn't play and Boris was ignominiously clobbered by Aussie unknown, Peter (who?) Doohan in the second round.
1987 USO
Lendl bt Wilander 6-7 6-0 7-6 6-4. Four hours and forty seven minutes.......Another 8 for Lendl who played his third magnificent USO in a row, losing only one set (and that he had set-point in) and 59 games. Wilander had been in hot form himself, racing through the first four rounds and then beating his nemesis, Mecir, and Edberg in four sets in the semi, to make it through. Lendl had himself drubbed old rivals McEnroe and Connors in the QF and Semi so it was quite like old times all around! Wilander gets a 5, Edberg and Connors 2 apiece. Becker? Beaten by Gilbert (you know, the "nobody" who Lendl had flogged on the same court a year earlier) in the fourth round.
