Who can beat Federer at the Slams

Scott 31 March 2005 23:19:28
Federer has reached such a zenith in the game of tennis that only a handful
of players can beat him at the Slams (assuming he's at at least 85% of his
best form). Here's a list of players I think that can stop Fed at the next
four slams:

1. French Open - Coria, Nalbandian, Moya, Nadal, Gaudio

2. Wimbledon - Ancic, Henman, J. Johansson

3. US Open - Roddick, Safin, Hrbaty, Nalbandian, Berdych

4. AO - Safin, Hrbaty, Nalbandian

Any additions, comments?

Scott

etc)
in the early rounds

Roddick, Ancic (lesser chance)> 3. US Open - Roddick, Safin, Hrbaty, Nalbandian, Berdych

A dozen+ more. All you need is fed having "off day" and opponent "on day".
(may be I am too pessimistic)
2. Wimbledon - Ancic, Henman, J. Johansson

Roddick still can do it but I am afraid he has developed (agassi vs
sampras -type) mental block when playing Fed. May be we should add Henman.
(what has Karlovic done lately? not seen any talk of him like last year?)
3. US Open - Roddick, Safin, Hrbaty, Nalbandian, Berdych

Ditch Hrbaty and Berdych. May be add Ljubilic.
4. AO - Safin, Hrbaty, Nalbandian

Ditch Hrbaty add Roddick

not really a Hrbaty obsession...I just noticed that Hrbaty is 2-0 against
Fed. I guess you can discount Athens though.

What's with the Hrbaty obsession? Federer tanked the match in Ohio like> he did in Athens to rest and prepare for USO and it was exactly the> right thing to do.>

i think 3 of those are actually favorite over fed at FO.
2. Wimbledon - Ancic, Henman, J. Johansson

i'd take henman off that list, put roddick on..
3. US Open - Roddick, Safin, Hrbaty, Nalbandian, Berdych

hmm..
4. AO - Safin, Hrbaty, Nalbandian

why so high on hrbaty? we know safin can do it, nalbandian seemed to
previously have fed's #..i'm hopeful to see a fed/nadal miami final, might
tell us a little bit about the upcoming season..

Guga?
2. Wimbledon - Ancic, Henman, J. Johansson

Not Henman. C'mon, now.
:)
3. US Open - Roddick, Safin, Hrbaty, Nalbandian, Berdych

Why the last 3; Berdych because of the Olympics?
4. AO - Safin, Hrbaty, Nalbandian

Same question about last two.

Scrap Nalbandian, just because he had early success doesnt mean he is a Fed
nemesis now. Hrbaty, you have to be kidding. Perhaps Nadal.

Yes, I was imagining that Fed really lost that match. I didn't see it so I
don't know.

As for Henman, I think his game matches up well with Fed's on grass.

I don't think Kuerton can beat Fed again, even on clay.

Nalbandian has always given Fed problems. When you're lookking for a list
of players who CAN beat Fed, you've got to look at him. Same with Hrbaty,
although I understand that the experts here think that Fed was exhausted
when he played him at Athens.

I'd actually add Safin to the list at the French. He can play on the stuff,
has won a couple of titles on clay, and has been to the semis there.

Karlovic??? OK, he might have knocked out Hewitt as defending
champion, but that was a real, real fluke that will never be repeated.
Karlovic has poor movement and Federer would tear him apart.

Karlovic is a choker.

He loses *every point* he doesn't get to serve.

If he can build his confidence up to win a handful of these he'd be
winning way more matches....

Yes, Nadal is too good not to bust a move soon. My opinion is Fed at
his best will beat Rafael right now, but it will have to be his best.
If he drops a 1st t/b then watch out....

Yes, except Roddick has much better chance than Hewitt....

We've seen Hewitt's top notch game make no dent in Fed. Can't say that
about Roddick.

If you can stay with him he could crumble, as he did v Safin at AO (down
2-5 before making score respectable)....

Mentally he's no Sampras/Jimbo.... yet.

On early-round slick grass, Karlovic can beat anyone. He really extended the
sets well against Federer when they met at Wimbledon last year. But if the
grass is dried out, you have to figure most top players would take advantage
of the few points here and there on his serve to win the match, even in
tiebreaks.
