Hewitt can't beat Federer. Roddick can't beat Hewitt (or Federer for that matter). Safin can beat them all, but doesn't seem to make it to the latter rounds as much. Who's the real Number 2?

Well let's see what happens in the final. Federer has been fortunate in that he has not played a top 10 player in getting to the final. it is a shame Roddick did not previal in the semi, as I feel he has a better chance against Federer.

Did you realize you can lose to non top-10 players? As Safin did. Plus Federer beat a HOT Ljubicic who is as good as any top 10enner now.

Safin is Safin though. As for Ljubicic, I'm not so impressed. He may have made a few finals but he has a dismal GS and MS record.
Hewitt. US Open final, AO final, Masters Cup final. Lost to eventual> GS champion last 5 times.
Yes, Hewitt is definitely "most likely to finish 2nd" at a big tournament right now, so perhaps that makes him #2.

Hewitt's most consistent, but has almost no chance of beating Fed as he simply has no power to hurt him. Fed is bigger, better athlete, way more talented & can just cruise in 3rd gear & win easily every time. Hewitt's strengths are nothing for Fed - he can easily rally with him from baseline, & then when the mood takes him uncork his wrist & point over or easy put away....
Safin is way too erratic to talk about as a serious challenger.
Roddick is still Fed's biggest threat on paper, but clearly is suffering a crisis of confidence.
So on balance I'd still say Roddick is next most likely to win a slam out of the 3....

Federer is now the most consistant player and he is even more consistant than Hewitt, Hewitt is definitely more consistant than both Roddick and Safin, but at their best Roddick and Safin are definitely more explosive players than Hewitt.>

On paper may be, but Safin is much better match for Federer.

Yes, even though he has less chance of beating Fed than Roddick or> Safin. I guess he's not the absolute no.2 then....?
yes, since safin has a slam title, he's obviously had the 2nd best year over the past 52 wks...

Of course, Hewitt has the least chance of beating Federer but that wasn't the question. He isn't losing to Johansson or Mutis at GS's. Safin lost in round 1 of W and US Open.

Only because Hewitt hasn't had to play him til later, thanks to no.2 ranking. But on the court he has far less chance of actually beating Fed than Roddick/Safin...
Hewitt's grip on no.2 is likely to get stronger over the next few months as this was a bad spell for him last year and this year he will probably score more ranking points.
