Um -- the Pan Pacific takes place in February. I doubt she's going to wait eleven months.
In fact, JHH is returning at Charleston -- a very smart move, since it brings her back on clay (her favorite surface) and exactly six months after her injury (meaning that she will get a protected ranking).
If by "Pan Pacific" you mean "Pacific Life," i.e. Indian Wells -- she is NOT playing.

According to her website, JHH is actually going to play in Miami first.
It's hard to see her getting back to the top. That illness she had can really deplete energy levels, and no-one can be sure that she has now fully recovered. Her performances at previous comeback attempts were very subdued e.g US Open last year.

Last year, JHH swore off Miami because it wasn't run well. Now she's going to give up her injury ranking to play there? (And she would have to, if I count this right: She last played at the USO, so Miami starts less than six months after her injury.)
Ii can't prove this is wrong, but I find this extremely doubtful, even if it is her web site. Every other source says Charleston, which is a much more logical place for her to come back.

That should test the old stamina, alright.
Officially, her problem at this point is not her stamina but the fracture in her knee. Hardcourt would be much more dangerous than clay, as far as bone damage is concerned.
And, really, I don't think clay tests JHH's stamina the way it tests, say, Davenport's. JHH knows how to win on the stuff, and indeed built her game around it to a certain extent. It's very hard to get her on the defensive on clay. It won't tire her out excessively.

The US Open ended 12 September; the first week of Miami is the week beginning 21 March. That should be more than six months.
Of course, that assumes the WTA use the same math and time reckoning that normal people do.

Her harder hitting was never hard enough. Serena used to squash her in Wimbledon

Agreed. However, I will take JHH's backhand over Serena's any day.

Go to http://www.kimclijsters.be/ and compare her calendars for April> 25th in English (she's playing Fed Cup) and in Dutch (she's playing> Warsaw).>
there may be a slight error in the date stated on the dutch website but there is less here than you are trying to make it appear to be.
as far as henin-hardenne is concerned, the nasdaq-100 also lists henin-hardenne as playing. of course, the fact that she is listed does not guarantee that she will play, but if she states as much on her website as well, it strongly suggests that henin-hardenne, at some point, had the intention of playing this tournament.
the "strategies" as suggested by robert b. waltz just doesn't add up. first of all, henin-hardenne's ranking is #21, so she doesn't really need an injury ranking to get into tournaments. a player like henin-hardenee understands that to be a top ranked player you can't avoid tournaments because of the surface. if it really were the case that she is so borderline in her recovery that the surface made the difference between being injured or not, then she wouldn't be ready to play anyway.
