02' USO, Agassi V Hewitt: Agassi's last big match win?
Ram 6 March 2005 05:15:52
I would say this was Agassi's last big match win a slam, he has come up short in all of these occasions since:
2003 FO QF: Coria hurts him with 18 backhands down the line, exploiting Agassi's injured right hip, leaving restricted movement to the right (rumoured to have been caused by car crash in 2000)
2003 W R16: Should have beaten the shitty scud, but didn't take his break point chances.
2003 USO SF: Two days in a row proves too much for Andre, as he never gets into a rhythm against Ferrero.
2004 AO SF: Agassi falters on the break point chances because of a cautious conservatism seeping into his game. But more crucially, Safin uses the Coria tactic to stretch Agassi out wide on the right, and the backhand down the line hurts Agassi repeatedly. Agassi may well have won otherwise, because it was a constant source of points for the Russian.
2004 USO QF: Tough one too accept for Andre, the wind meant it could have gone either way. But it would have been a great chance for Andre to win a 9th slam had he advanced against the Swiss man.
2005 AO QF: Agassi pummels the ball as hard as he can against Fed and it works, accept Fed starts serving Sampras-style and there is nothing Andre can do. After the first set, it becomes apparent that there is now way Agassi can hurt Fed when he is at his best.
He won the AO in 2003, but I wouldn't classify victories against the likes of Grosjean as big. But at the same time, who knows? Maybe he will beat someone big in a slam before he retires, Roddick or Hewitt, maybe?
I would say this was Agassi's last big match win a slam
er, any slam final is a big match, and agassi won ao 03.
