First title of the year for Davenport. I'd say she's clinched the #1 spot at least until Amelia Island comes off, and my feeling is she'll hold it at least until Wimbledon.
You may recall that Serena has been #1 in this department since the Australian Open. I wondered if her bad result this week would hurt her. It didn't; her score is down, but not her ranking (Davenport's divisor score, incidentally, also fell as a result of Dubai, because her quality points were so bad).
I note that the WTA and Divisor have the same Top Ten, though the order varies a little (not much, really, considering). Below that, the differences are bigger -- e.g. notice that Martinez is on the verse of the Top 20, but look how low Jankovic is!

I think some serious changes to the ranking system are needed if the top two women in the rankings are slamless. What a complete joke. I'm not saying Davenport doesn't deserve it because under the current system she does, but under a sensible system she would not.

Well, try some facts. She won't.
Oh, if she wins them, she has a good chance at #1 down the road; she has a good chance at it even if she doesn't. But even if she wins them, she won't get to #1 at this time. She's too far back, and has too much in her seventeenth and such events, and there are only so many points available....

The opposite could be that the non-slam events become useless if you can be #1 just by getting a slam and doing a very average season.
Well, I know which way I would prefer it. What about you? How come this rarely happens in the mens. Look, its not just the world number one that hasn't won a slam BUT ALSO THE WORLD NUMBER TWO, AND IN MY OPINION IT IS DEMEANING THE WOMEN'S GAME AND MAKING IT LOOK COMPLETELY STUPID.
And not only that, the world number one and two have managed ONE GRAND SLAM FINAL BETWEEN THEM. ABSOLUTELY PATHETIC! TIME TO PLUG THE LIFE SUPPORT MACHINE INTO THE WTA TOUR BECAUSE THE PULSE IS STARTING TO GET FEINT.

If we were to write on some lists, we sould draw a player's list that should play another sport (apart from real tennis) : Johanson (the one with the 51 aces but still a loser), Roddick ... would be the top listed. All that to say your post is idiotic.>

We'll see ...
What are you going to do, award her 200 quality points for beating my expectations? The points *aren't there*. She needs to *add* 700 points. At two 325 point events. Yes, she gets quality points. But she also has to take points off.

As I've pointed out repeatedly, the men (with the Required events) were one match away from having four Slam winners outside the Top Four in 2002. Not only that, but Slamless Agassi went into the YEC with a mathematical chance of catching Hewitt for #1. And I don't seem to recall the commentators bitching and moaning about that.

Oops! I should have checked my facts there. I thought he'd slipped in the rankings since last year, probably because I assumed that there haven't been enough clay tournaments lately for Gaudio to have maintained his ranking.
I'd better acknowledge him as a worth Grand Slam holder after all as he's managed to maintain his Top Ten ranking.

I always have to laugh when someone argues with you about the mathematics of what's possible within the rankings system.

Robert, let's say Sharapova wins every tournament she plays from now until the real points are on the line at Wimbledon. Could she make it?
I note that Davenport was the finalist at Indian Wells last year, but didn't play Miami. So she's got 270 points to defend -- but that doesn't make all that big a dent in the gap between her and Sharapova.

Yes. In a couple of years' time, we could be looking at Serbia and> Montenegro winning the Fed Cup.>
I, for one, can't figure it because the one time I saw Jankovic play (3rd set of her 2R match v. Sharapova at the US Open) I was not impressed at all. Don't know if it was nerves or what, but she seemed to be pushing the ball, and frequently caught flat-footed. I'm guessing what I saw was not representative of her typical play, since she was competing well earlier in that match according to the score, and seems to be a quick rise since then, but she really was pretty dreadful in that set.

I have seen her twice, and she has been really good both times, Filderstadt and yesterday in the final (or what Eurosport showed about it, was this another case when it was live on Eurosport 2?). And Ivanovic is probably going to be even better, so they really can have a very strong team in a couple of years.

JJ was making fantastic gets in her match against Davenport in the Dubai final -- things you wouldn't have thought *anyone* not name Williams would manage. She had more backhand winners than Davenport did, and kept burning LD with backhands down the line.
She herself told me in Philly that she needs to work on her fitness -- she was visibly tired in the 3rd set in Dubai. She lost that set 6-4, and you have to think she'd have had a good chance to win it if she had better endurance -- which she is working on. (Although: the first match I ever saw her play was against Lisa Raymond in Philly, and that was irrationally long.)
I imagine like all young players she's still coming to grips with her game and how to pace herself and keep concentration in a long match. But she seems very motivated -- when I talked to her she was *so* excited about how well everything was going.
