Speaking of rankings, as of today Safin is #2 in the race.

The race isn't a ranking.

The race isn't a ranking.

Safin is solid at No. 4.

He's quite a bit behind Roddick, who's just behind Hewitt, who's waay behind
Federer.

Winning the AO didn't boost Safin much because he made the final last year.

Safin needs to play more tourneys besides TMS events and slams -- and win
them -- if he expects to catch up with Federer.

Next ATP tournament is Indian Wells on outdoor hardcourt.

But safin is playing davis cup in moscow next week, indoor carpet.

And Federer would have to lose a lot of points - ie crash out very
early at Wimbledon and USO, not reach TMC, etc. I can see Fed
remaining number one for the whole of this year, no problem.

Are you talking about ranking or tennis play?

IMO Safin (in tennis play) is nº 2.
