There could be another interpretation: One could also interpret your observation as that the advances in equipment technology since the 40mm ball has negated its intended effect - slowing down the speed of the ball and extending rallies. In addition, it could be that rallies might have been even shorter than it is now, had the 40mm ball not been adopted. Banning speed glue would have been more drastic and more effective in extending rallies.

Wasn't there speed glue in 1993? Some of the points in this match seem like exhibition points where they are not trying to end the point quickly, but rather giving the audience a show. But then again I don't know much about the style of play of these two. Maybe that is just how they prefer to play out the points. Very different to most of today's players.
