Looking for a seriously durable table

Raffir 8 March 2005 05:16:43
I'm looking for a seriously durable table to be placed in a high
school. To describe what I'm looking for, let me say that our last
table collapsed because people kept putting knapsacks etc. on it.
Since I suspect this is unavoidable, I'm now looking for a ping pong
table I can get in Canada (Toronto) which will stand up to at least
moderate punishment and won't cost too much (the most expensive one
I'm looking at is around $600).

I'm sort of eyeing this one:

http://www6.sears.ca/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?categoryId=10447&catalogId=10001&storeId=10001&langId=-1&productId=157842031

as it looks quite durable and they'll ship where I am.

Any thoughts, particularly on that one or on other things available in
the Toronto area?

Thanks for your time,

- Raffi.

For the same price you can get a table that is much better.

One of the very best I have seen for the price is this one-

I had the Stiga Prestige. Poor paint job. After a few hours, all the table
tennis balls had blue spots on the from the table.

So which one would be a better choice?

Are there any stores in the Greater Toronto Area that stock them?

I'm also looking at a Kettler Stockholm model, or possibly a Double
Happiness model as shown here:

http://www.ping-pong.com/cgi-bin/shopper.cgi?search=action&keywords=Double%20and%20Happiness%20and%20ttTable

I don't want to spend too much, though.

It should be able to withstand knapsacks for sure, maybe even people
leaning on it.

Any thoughts?

Thanks a lot for your time.

I'd reccommend a Kettler aluminum table. Our local rec center has a
bunch and they hold out well (except for the nets- so buy extra). The
newer ones bounce a bit better, but are a bit weird for real serious
play. Since it's in a high school, I think they'll be the best bang
for your buck. The paint may come off, the aluminum may bend a bit,
but they should hold up to some beating. God knows how many tables
our rec center went through before they got these.

Good luck

Kids, yes. Big fat people, probably not.

But NONE of these tables are made for sitting on.

That's why they don't call them "Table Tennis Chairs".

Clearly, trying to keep people from sitting on them is hard but you
need to at least post a sign saying so.

OK, I think I'm going to go with the Stiga Eurotech. Will it withstand
someone sitting (!) on it? Apparently that did the last one in.

I think I'm going to go with the Eurotech.

Is there any way to add legs? I'm thinking two extra pairs, in the
middle of the table.

If you mean putting extra bracing legs underneath the playing surface
after you've unfolded the table into playing position, sure.

But the legs are self-retracting when you lift up the ends of the table
and attaching extra legs or bracing would probably interfere with that
action.
