I'm looking for a seriously durable table to be placed in a high school. To describe what I'm looking for, let me say that our last table collapsed because people kept putting knapsacks etc. on it. Since I suspect this is unavoidable, I'm now looking for a ping pong table I can get in Canada (Toronto) which will stand up to at least moderate punishment and won't cost too much (the most expensive one I'm looking at is around $600).

I'd reccommend a Kettler aluminum table. Our local rec center has a bunch and they hold out well (except for the nets- so buy extra). The newer ones bounce a bit better, but are a bit weird for real serious play. Since it's in a high school, I think they'll be the best bang for your buck. The paint may come off, the aluminum may bend a bit, but they should hold up to some beating. God knows how many tables our rec center went through before they got these.
Good luck Luong
