Lol, yeah. I find it a kinda nice mess though, diversity being the spice of life and all that.
So the "real" Scottish is Scottish_Gaelic, that is spoken by about 1%?
I wouldn't say 'real' Scottish language, but certainly Gaelic is the historic language of Scotland...spoken now predominantly in the Hebridean Islands and some areas of the Highlands. I'm no expert, but what is taught in most schools here would probably be considered Standard Scottish English. True Scots (Lowland Scots, not Gaelic), however, is regarded as an ancient dialect of English...and while it differs quite a bit from the Standard Scottish Englsih taught in schools, is very much still alive as a spoken language. There are also plenty other very particular dialects which are different enough to seem like their own language...such as Doric.
For sure unique dialects are prominent enough here that you could struggle a little to be understood from one part of the country to the other. Its fun! ;)
