Indian Wells isn't for another whole month, and even Dubai which features Federer, Nadal etc is another 3 weeks away. This hiatus is reflected in the desperate nature of the some of the posting going on here - nothing at all worth talking about ... I'm still recovering from all the excitement of the Aussie Open. If the rest of the year is *more* exciting than the AO then we are all going to be in serious trouble

so the GOAT is the player who has the most Slams, including a career Grand Slam.?

A career slam can be achieved by a 1 dimensional player getting a few breaks every 3 yrs or so. Nonsense. Nobody wins all the majors because he's lucky. He might get a sweetheart draw but he still has to win 7 best of 5 matches on every surface. You used Agassi as an example. He reached 3 FO finals and won one of them. How many did Sampras reach? How many did he win? None. That's cause he sucked on clay.
Incorrect on so many levels. If Sampras sucked on clay how come he beat Agassi last 2 times on the surface, both in straight sets? Agassi must have been licking his chops playing a pigeon like Pete on clay.
How come he beat 7 FO champs on clay?
The reason he did poorly at FO is scheduling - just too close to Wimbledon for him to give it a serious effort. If it were > 3 mnths from Wimbledon he woulda won a couple, like he did Italian Open, DC final on clay etc
Those achievements don't fit somebody who sucked on clay imo. That would mean 99% of dirtballers suck more than Sampras.

Would you concede the "clown era" thing?
Would you make excuses for Federer?
Will Roger Federer fabricate a way out?
I'm not saying that will happen. But let's say it does and you were saying that Roger Fedor could win 20 grand slam titles.
Scary isn't it.

It is a mystery! Were Connors and Lendl already thinking of the future. Were they Nostradamus? What do you mean "never played with wood"? Of course all these guys played with wood at some point. Connors and Lendl started playing with wood, as did anybody who started playing before the 80s. Around the late 70s to early 80s there were not that many options: pure wood (some old guys), composite (Borg, McEnroe and most players), metal (the Lacoste repackaged as Wilson T2000 for Connors), fiber (the Head Arthur Ashe, the Yamaha that came in black and red [???] and a few others). Large frames (what we call nowadays "compact" frames) were at the time seen as rackets for old folks and their only pro proponent was bad old Ron Tiriac.

I can remember a few Wimbledons ago him going on and on about every detail of Borg's career for hours during the rain delays on BBC TV. He knows the reasons why Borg left better than Borg himself, it seems.

This a great time to visit RST. We are being treated to two excellent examples of misspelling and grammatical errors in two separate thread titles! "Why is brog mcenroe 1980 final still considered a classic": (Excellent! Changing Borg to Brog is well done and very original!) "Did borg ever explained why he left tennis suddenly": (not as good as the prior example. Still, the construction: "Did borg ever explained"; i.e., not 'explain', is still great work.) Who can post the worst misspelling and/or grammatical error in a subject at RST?

Again as I said before Stones were basically a 60s band with their best albums, best line up and their peak in the 60s. Thats why I didnt include them. The seven those I have included are basically 70s bands and had a lot of peak albums in the 70s Depends on how you define 'best' album, 'best' line up and 'peak'.
1960's STONES ALBUMS (UK or UK & US) The Rolling Stones (1964) - UK #1 (51 wks) The Rolling Stones No. 2 (1965) -UK #1 (37 wks) Out of Our Heads (1965) - UK #2 (24 wks) Aftermath (1966) - UK #1 (28 wks) Between the Buttons (1967) - UK #3 (22 wks) Their Satanic Majesties Request (1967) - UK #3 (13 wks), US #2 (30 wks) Gold Beggars Banquet (1968) - UK #3 (12 wks), US #5 (32 wks) Platinum Let It Bleed (1969) - UK #1 (29 wks), US #3 (44 wks) 2x Platinum
1960's STONES ALBUMS (US) (Prior to Dec 8 1967) England's Newest Hitmakers (1964) - 11 (35 wks) Gold 12 X 5 (1964) - 3 (38 wks) Gold The Rolling Stones, Now! (1965) - 5 (53 wks) Gold Out of Our Heads (1965) - 1 (65 wks) Platinum December's Children (And Everybody's) (1965) - 4 (33 wks) Gold Aftermath (1966) - 2 (50 wks) Platinum Between the Buttons (1967) - 2 (47 wks) Gold
1970's STONES ALBUMS Sticky Fingers (1971) - UK #1 (26 wks), US # 1 (62 wks) 3x Platinum Exile on Main St. (1972) - UK #1 (16 wks), US # 1 (43 wks) 3x Platinum Goats Head Soup (1973) - UK #1 (14 wks), US # 1 (37 wks) 3x Platinum It's Only Rock 'n' Roll (1974) - UK #2 (9 wks), US # 1 (20 wks) Platinum Black and Blue (1976) - UK #2 (14 wks), US # 1 (24 wks) Platinum Some Girls (1978) - UK #2 (25 wks), US # 1 (82 wks) 6x Platinum
Now, I'd agree there were more Stones albums in the 60's (not least because of different versions of albums released on each side of the Atlantic!) but it seems pretty clear that they were plenty successful enough in the 1970's as well to be called a 70's band.
Of course, banging on about arbitary date numbering systems to split up and categorise is futile anyway. It's not like somebody flicked a cultural switch on 31 December 1969...

Tennis has quite a full year round season and many top class tournaments. The Olympics is already a much bloated event with too many events in it. Did the Olympics want tennis, or did tennis want the Olympics? Somebody had to make the request.

| 2008 Open Gaz de France: Chakvetadze v. Szavay [Spoiler] Mimus 23:12:57 |
| | Watched a rerun of the 2008 Open Gaz de France final last night on Tennis Channel, Anna Chakvetadze v. Agnes Szavay.
Szavay's serve sucked in the first (seven double faults), but her coach came down between the first and second sets and presumably used the Hungarian word for "topspin" several times, so she righted her ship a bit in the second which seemed to unbalance Chakvetadze a bit, while Chakvetadze readjusted and took the third pretty comfortably, although we did finally see some pretty good rallies.
Chakvetadze took it 6-2 3-6 6-2.
Chakvetadze was 6-0 in finals going in, while Szavay knocked off Hantuchova and Dementieva on her way to the final.
Not really a very good match for either, and not a very exciting one for the crowd, either: Probably the best part of it was a Szavay lob in the first set that fried Chakvetadze.
Chakvetadze was far too prone to trying baseline dropshots in the second, no doubt due to her becoming unhinged a bit at the increased pressure from Szavay, while Szavay showed once again that she does play an all-court game, coming to the net repeatedly and doing pretty well there.
The tan margins of the court there caused the ball on the long-distance TV shots to apparently vanish, on ordinary non-HD color TV, anyway.
