Cambiasso

Esteban Matias Deleau Cambiasso - remember that name -
or at least the last part of it.

Those who follow European soccer know that Inter has some
very talented players. Almost all know of Adriano or
Toldo or Javier Zanetti or maybe even of Martins.

Precious few know of the Argentine defensive midfielder and
that's a shame. He is simply a brilliant footballer. Imagine
Javier Zanetti's stamina and effort combined with more skill
and more intelligence - that's Cambiasso. As my Interista
friend Renato Guadagnolo pointed out in a chat on #rss, he
is a rare breed - a player whom is actually BETTER since
arriving at San Siro to play for Moratti! :\

He is easily the best Inter player this season - Adriano or
no Adriano. I actually agree with Benny that Inter should sell
the big Brasilian to a Chelsea or whomever else want to
PAY (no Real Madrids need apply) for him. Oba-Oba Martins
is an exciting player to be sure but Cambiasso has skills that
are more than just athletic - he is brilliant surveyor of the
game in the tradition of Beckenbauer.

If you have the chance, watch the Samp-Inter game of a few
days back - Cambiasso was a master in this game and was
simply everywhere he was needed to be, covering his zone
of the field (and a couple of others as well) like a blanket, winning
ball after ball and sending the ball to an attacking Inter player,
who of course would promptly lose it, prompting the Argentine
to once again win the ball, send it on the attack, etc., etc.,

Cambiasso alone makes up for the absolutely horrid imbalance
in Inter's defense. The incredible pace of Cordoba matched with
the almost sloth-like moves of Mihajlovic and the not-much-
faster gait of Materazzi. The solid team play and experience
of Favalli matched with his woeful passing and faltering physique.
It's a defense full of mismatched talents and one that requires
Cambiasso to be heroic on a regular basis.

Fortunately for us Interistas it is something that Cambiasso
regularly does.

There are those footballers who labor in the shadows of more
spectacular players, the players who make a team succeed
when it shouldn't, who make a game flow when all else points
to boredom and static displays of near-useless skills. Inter has
not had a player like that in LONG time - at least not since
the younger and best days of Javier Zanetti (alas those days they
are long gone now, leaving only a brave, but limited, player.)

- Riff

P.S. A tip of the cap to Liverpool - too bad the tape of the game
was erased by accident by a family member before I could view
it. I'll survive that misfortune - now, if that had been an Inter
comeback ..... I would not be writing this now. ;)

The Italian media (and I) agree with you:

Rai Televideo "Best 11": best playes after 37 matchdays
(taken from the mean values of the pagelle in 7 newspapers)

1. Cambiasso (Inter) 6,5
2. Pagliuca (Bologna) 6,45
3. C. Lucarelli (Livorno) 6,43
. Veron (Inter) 6,43
5. Corini (Palermo) 6,40
6. Toni (Palermo) 6,36
. Pizarro (Udinese) 6,36
8. Storari (Messina) 6,35
. Emerson (Juventus) 6,35
10. Zola (Cagliari) 6,34
11. F. Cannavaro (Juventus) 6,33
12. Iaquinta (Udinese) 6,32
. Vucinic (Lecce) 6,32
14. Shevchenko (Milan) 6,31
. Adriano (Inter) 6,31

Ciao,
Werner

Another Real Madrid blunder...selling off Cambiasso (remember Sameul
Eto'o). I think the Madrid bosses look only for super-expensive players
who are well established instead of establishing super-skilled players
themselves.
That said, Luxemburgo did recall Portillo from the Viola mid-season. But
with someone like Michael Owen fighting for a place in the first XI, I
don't see Portillo becoming anything but a bench warmer.

He looked ordinary or worse last year, but never really got an extended
run in the team to prove himself. I think he played a lot more before
last year, and Beckham's signing (and the decision to play Beckham in
the middle) undermined Cambiasso's position. Unfortunate for Cambiasso
and Real, since I think one of the reasons they thought Makelele was
surplus to requirements was that they expected Cambiasso to fill his shoes.

Couldn't agree more - I've been saying the same thing since he first turned
up at Madrid. Problem is, he's one of these players that needs a formation
suited to him, else he doesn't seem able to adapt to the game and thus is a
bit anonymous (like Steven Gerrard for England).

I think you're being a little too harsh on the viewers. Interistas or> not, Cambiasso's largely masterful performances this season have been> recognised and deservedly he's viewed as Inter's best player this> season. In fact some fans have called for him to be the captain once> Javier goes.>

I certainly don't intend to demean Inter fans Catenaccio! ;)

Inter fans and most serious Italian football fans know
this (that Cambiasso has been excellent), but when you
read articles on Inter from outside (or comments from
fans outside Serie A) you rarely hear about Cambiasso.
You hear about Adriano or Toldo or maybe Martin, but
hardly ever Cambiasso.

I would also endorse his being the captain - he is well
liked and a true team player and firey leader, yet he
shows class and intelligence on the field as well. He
would be a good captain.

And when you hear about Toldo, it's hardly good news...

Agreed.
