Congratulations, RON and Barcelona supporter RSS'ers!

Although I think you, perhaps Balen Arenas and Manolo back in the day,
are the only consistently vocal culés here.

Somehow, I think all of Spain are Barça supporters tonight. I heard
the street celebrations have been going on all night. :)

Wait, wait, wait Vick.

Juan Vazquez has also declared himself to be a culé, although his first
allegiance in Spain is to Celta de Vigo, almost in 1st Div. again.

I really doubt that. I was actually very surprised how anti-Barcelona
most people in Andalucia seemed to be. You would think there would be
more anti-Madrid feeling, but no, I'd say support in Granada for the
clasico would be 50/50 or so, but no, it was more like 85/15 pro Madrid.

Not really surprising as Andalucia is pretty pro Madrid. On the other hand,
almost my entire family and friends are anti-Madrid (except for one misfit
who supports Atletico Madrid). I have read all the uproar that the comments
of Etoo have made. But really it is fueled by the Madrid dailies MARCA and
Diario AS. The media bias of those papers (and other local papers to be
fair) makes Fox News seem like they are fair and balanced ;-)

What I really meant to write (duh) was I would have expected 50/50, but
in actual fact it was more 85/15. Loud cheers whenever Madrid scored
(heard all over the city), cursinng when Barca scored.

Not really surprising as Andalucia is pretty pro Madrid.

This is what surprised me. Generally the regions of Canada resent
central authority and all that comes with it. People out here (and to
some extent in the Maritimes where I grew up) love to see Montreal and
Toronto (especially Toronto) lose. There is a resentment of anything
coming from Ottawa (seat of central government) as well.

I naively expected Spain to be a bit similar (resentment of central
government hence of Madrid; Plus Real Madrid being associated with
Franco, plus the fact they have been top dogs so long) - with most
people wanting them to lose. What I found though was that it seemed
Andalucians were much more anti-Basque and anti-Catalan than anti-Madrid.

Well the pro-basque terrorist groups have been blowing people up all over
Spain so that has probably caused resentment against Barcelona.

??? either I am missing something subtle here, or you don't seem to
realise that Barcelona has nothing to do with Basques.

I think you have hit the nail on the head. The Spanish are much less
tolerant of the rights and aspirations of linguistic minorities* (even
in the constitution) than we are in Canada (and let's face it, we are
not exactly super-tolerant either). I just didn't know enough about
this beforehand, and hence was surprised about how anti-Barca so many
people were.

* whether this lack of tolerance is relatively new and precipitated by
ETA etc. (and hence is very understandable) , or is of much longer date,
I don't know.
