English Promotion and Relegation Part 0: The Daily News: Monday 09 May 2005 ==============================================================
Prem: Arsenal 1 point out, Everton to UCL.
Arsenal's 3-1 win over Liverpool all but insures 2nd place for the Gunners while knocking the Reds out of next year's UEFA Champions League qualification by league placement. Manchester United now need to win their two remaining games, have Arsenal lose their final two matches, and Man Utd need to overcome a 12 goal advantage in goal differential. With Liverpool's loss, Everton claims the last UCL berth. .........................................................................................
FL Championship: Wigan promoted, Crewe escape.
Ipswich Town's 1-1 draw to relegation candidate Brighton & Hove Albion denied them automatic promotion after Wigan Athletic's 3-1 win over Reading. Wigan complete their ascent to the top of the pyramid with their Premiership debut next season. West Ham United's 1-2 win against 2005 Carling Cup Semi-Finalists Watford combined with Reading's loss broke the tie for the last Play-Off spot. WHU's win also eliminated Sheffield United's slim hopes at a Play-Off spot. (A 4-2 loss to the Wolverhampton Wanderers did not help Sheffield, either.) Elsewhere, in a Play-Off preview, Derby County claimed the second Play-Off spot with a 3-1 win over 3rd Play-Off side Preston North End.
Sheffield United's failure to make the Play-Offs does set-up a possible reunion with Sheffield Wednesday after a 2 year absence following Wednesday's relegation to the Third Division after the 2003 season.
Gillingham's 2-2 draw with relegated Nottingham Forest leaves them as the odd man out in a 3-way race to safety. Brighton & Hove Albion's draw with Ipswich Town gave them the point they needed to escape relegation while Crewe Alexandra's 2-1 win against Coventry City gave them the 3 points they needed to catch Gillingham and the goal that broke the tie for the last safe spot. .........................................................................................
Step 5: North Greenford United end second, Bideford Western champs
Corsham Town's hopes for the Western League Premier Division title were crush by a 4-0 loss to Exmouth Town. The loss ends Corsham Town's season 2 points shy of Bideford, who will bring step 5 league play to an end Tuesday in a now meaningless match with Brislington.
Dunston Federation Brewery lost 2-0 on the final day of the season to 2005 FA Vase Semi-Finalist Bedlington Terriers thereby bringing an end to their 42 league match unbeaten run and leaving no club in the top 9 levels of the pyramid unbeaten for the year.
In the three-way chase for second place in the Combined Counties League Premier Division, North Greenford United jumped past Godalming & Guildford, whose season had ended earlier, and Chessington & Hook, whose 2-3 loss to Sandhurst Town dropped them to 3rd place, with a 0-2 win away over Raynes Park Vale. .........................................................................................
