Norwich in UEFA cup next year ?

Mh 6 May 2005 20:07:52
It looks as though Germany France and England all have a 50/50 chance of
picking up an extra UEFA cup place through the fair play process (unless
the table I was looking at is out of date).

If so, one English league Fair Play table I looked at has Norwich at the
top.

I don't think the place goes to the club at the top a country's fair
play league - it's just one more place allocated to the country which
will be filled by the next club in line in the league table.

UEFA does say it is supposed to go to the fairplay champs of the league.

Didn't Ipswich get a place this way a few years ago (even though
relegated) ? I also remember a lower table Scottish team getting a
place this way.

I've actually BEEN to Norwich. Just felt it absolutely necessary to inform
the world about that... =)

No, it goes to the team who tops the fair play table in the top division
- regardless if they're relegated or not. If that team's already
qualified for Europe, then they just go to 2nd place and so on.

If they just added a spot to the league table, then you could have a
team with the worst fair play record in the league get in, which defeats
the purpose of the award. :)

It could go to Spurs,if they don't qualify through normal Uefa placings.
The table as it stands is
1.Chelsea
2.Spurs
3.Norwich
4.Charlton
5.Arsenal

Norwich is a very attractive city with a relaxed atmosphere and friendly
people. I expect better from you, sir!

All work and no play, I'm afraid. We stayed at a nice Bed & Breakfast when
visiting ' http://www.syfer.com/company.htm '. But this is 10-15 years in
the past now.

Auxerre and Armina Bielefeld (not sure for them though, depends on how the
germans weight the red cards) are currently at the top of their respective
fair play table

Should Auxerre qualify normally for the UEFA cup, Lens should get the spot :
Lyon (2nd) already qualified for the Champions League, while Marseille (4th)
can still qualify for the UEFA's cup.
Incidentally, the worst team of the league is as well the dirtiest : Istres
(however, PSG and Lille don't do much better on that matter)

How exactly is the fair play ranking assigned ?

For UEFA it is a score assigned for each European competiton game
(includes national teams) based on player and supporter behaviour etc.
In other words there seems to be some subjectivity

For each national competition, though, I believe it is much more
objective and is based on red and yellow cards.

But don't quote me.
thanks.

Where does that table come from ? The following comes from Soccernet,
and is based on 1 point for yellow , 2 for red. I have no idea if that's
what the FA uses.

1 Norwich 34 2 38
2 Charlton 36 3 42
3 Liverpool 42 2 46
4. Chelsea 46 0 46
5. Arsenal 44 1 46
6 Southampton 43 2 47
7 Man City 42 3 48
8 West Brom 41 5 51
9 Middlesbrough 49 2 53
10 Man Utd 45 5 55
11 Tottenham 54 1 56
12 Bolton 55 1 57
13. Portsmouth 53 2 57
14 Aston Villa 56 2 60
15 Everton 54 4 62
16. Crystal Palace 56 3 62
17 Newcastle 55 5 65
18 Birmingham 62 3 68
19 Fulham 57 7 71
20 Blackburn 72 5 82
* Teams penalized 2 points for a red card and 1 point for a yellow

All this 'Fair Play' thing does is punish tackling teams. When Ipswich
won the fair play league it was mainly because they played George
Burley's style of defence, which involves rarely committing to the
tackle.

Interesting point. I wonder what percent of yellows are for tackles,
what percent for arguing, dissent, time wasting, taking one's shirt off
etc., and what percent for other things (shirt pulling, and non-tackle
fouls).
