English Promotion and Relegation Part 0: The Daily News: Monday 02 May 2005

UEFA: Five to Champions League?

In an interview on BBC Radio's FiveLive, UEFA president Lennart Johansson
suggested that an appeal by a holding Liverpool that failed to qualify would
be quickly dealt with by the executive committee with a possible positive
result that would need to be approved by the member nations.

"If there is a possibility to make an exception for the winner of the
Champions League then there could be an additional place," said Johansson.

Johansson admitted that a rule change to properly deal with a holder not
qualifying for the next UCL tournament will be discussed. Johansson also
felt that, ".... it would be unfair on Everton who have played the whole
season and qualified via fourth place to then exclude them."

Prem: Spurs go 7th, Man Utd close gap.

Tottenham Hotspur's 5-1 thrashing of Aston Villa Sunday lifted them up
into the last UEFA Cup spot bumping Middlesbrough down one on goal
differential. In other Sunday action, Manchester United thumped Charlton
Athletic 4-0. The win pulls the Red Devils within a point of 2nd placed
Arsenal who play today. Charlton's UEFA Cup hopes were ended by the loss as
Middlesbrough hosts Tottenham Hotspur with at least one gaining a point more
than Charlton can achieve.

Spennymoor United: Recorded expunged, again.

The UniBond Premier League in Sunday's Extraordinary league meeting
concerning the fate of Spennymoor United decided to expunge SU's record. A
prior decision to do so was voided by the FA after it was successfully
appealed by Gateshead, Hyde United and Workington due to not enough clubs
properly attending the prior league meeting. This decision is expected to be
appealed as well and the FA is expected to rule on any appeals on Wednesday.

Additionally, the league has provisionally scheduled the UniBond Premier
League - Premier Division Play-Off Semi-Finals for Saturday with the Final
occurring the middle of next week.

NLS Step 5: Three titles remain undecided.

The Combined Counties League Premier Division runners-up spot remains
wide open with Chessington & Hook leading with 1 match remaining; Godalming
& Guildford capable of catching them but are short 12 on goal differential;
and North Greenford United with a match in hand able to pass them. Walton
Casuals locked up the league championship weeks ago.

A battle for the United Counties League Premier Division will be played
Tuesday with trailing Potton United hosting leaders Cogenhoe United in the
season finale for both clubs. Only a win will give Potton United the
championship.

Two matches remain for each in a tight Western League Premier Division
race that ends Tuesday 10 May. Bideford currently lead by 3 points and by 28
on goal differential over 2nd placed Corsham Town.

The remaining 12 National League System Step 5 leagues have champions and
runners-up even though 3 leagues have matches remaining. A list of the
current possible promotion candidates follows:

Eastern Counties League Premier Division
-------------------------------------------------------------
AFC Sudbury ... 2nd Bury Town

Essex Senior League
-------------------------------------------------------------
Enfield Town ... 2nd Burnham Ramblers

Hellenic League Premier Division
-------------------------------------------------------------
Highworth Town ... 2nd Didcot Town

Kent League
-------------------------------------------------------------
Ramsgate ... 2nd Herne Bay

Midland Football Alliance
-------------------------------------------------------------
Rushall Olympic ... 2nd Chasetown

Northern Counties East Premier Division
-------------------------------------------------------------
Goole ... 2nd Selby Town

Northern League Division One
-------------------------------------------------------------
Dunston Federation Brewery ... 2nd Billingham Synthonia

North West Counties League Division One
-------------------------------------------------------------
Fleetwood Town ... 2nd Newcastle Town

Ryman Football League Division Two
-------------------------------------------------------------
Ilford ... 2nd Enfield

Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division
-------------------------------------------------------------
Potters Bar Town ... 2nd Hanwell Town

Sussex Counties League Division One
-------------------------------------------------------------
Horsham YMCA ... 2nd Rye & Iden United

Wessex League Division One
-------------------------------------------------------------
Lymington & New Milton ... 2nd Winchester City

Four of the leagues had no applicants for promotion, two more did have
applicants but they finished short in the league table. Additionally, a few
leagues have high placed candidates with stadiums awaiting Pitch Inspection
results. Whether there will be at least 8 league champions who both desire
promotion and have an acceptable Grade E stadium is publicly unknown but,
one runners-up's website suggests there are enough. The FA did not name the
leagues in question above. It is however known that 3 champions have passed
filed inspection and are Enfield Town of the Essex Senior League, Rushall
Olympic of the Midland Football Alliance, and Goole of the Northern Counties
East Premier Division. Additionally, North West Counties League Division One
runners-up Newcastle Town has passed pitch inspection. A final list of
promoted clubs and/or Play-Offs will be released at a later date by the FA
National League System Committee.

Tomorrow:

The beginning of the Play-Offs, and Arsenal-West Bromwich Albion
