Quickie MR: Ooh, Zidane furious, say comms, because Spanish newspapers revealed he had a "disease". Didn't hear what disease -- ironic, considering I put Surround Sound blaring just to get the atmosphere of the match (it's quite good).

It's at minute 40 now...and Ronaldo had threatened to score at least twice before, one a few moments before with a terrific touch to control the ball from a Beckham lob. They have a nice partnership. Raul...a shadow of a shadow of himself.

Quickie FT MR: For many parts of the game, Real Sociedad had complete control of the match, at least superficially, as often happens when a challenging team controls ball-possession, but not really having more than scares, rather than chances. For a team without Zidane, where one player is almost a ghost on the pitch, where Guti didn't start (when he was clearly the game saver), this was a good last ditch effort for a club which now trail a mere 3 points from league leaders, Barcelona. Argh.

Perhaps your "Surround Sound" is... The "match" was dire...malнsimo.

Anyways, the thalassemias are a wide-ranging group of hereditary>blood disorders which can have a range of symptoms ranging from mild>anemia to death in utero. It's most commonly found in Mediterranean>region, Africa and Southeast Asia. For a while it was even called>"Mediterranean anemia" due to its high incidence in the area.
Oh wow. That's incredible (yes people of that area, Middle-Eastern, Italians, Greeks, North Africans are the ones most susceptible).
Given that Zidane was able to maintain a high level of physical>fitness, he likely has a minor thalassemia which was probably>discovered incidentally. It's not enough to be used as an excuse for>his declining performance in the past year or two, though.
Unbelievable. Considering it's such a debilitating disorder, but then it also depends on whether it's 'alpha' or 'beta' IIRC. Funny how three weeks away from Med School leaves me grasping for memory-aids.
Still, my understanding of the story is that Marca first reported>this after interviewing Real's team physicians. It's poor form from>both parties. It should be the athlete's prerogative to tell the>public about his or her health issues, which should be kept as>confidential information between the athlete and the club's medical>staff.
Absolutely. What a shame this is. I wonder if there's not some skullduggery at work here.
p.s. Two great assists from Guti today, especially for the second>goal. He should have started instead of Solari, IMO.
I mentioned that in my MR (about Guti being on fire). Did you notice how Solari barely shook Luxemburgo's hand as he sat on the bench? He was in a terrible snit about it, and Guti's excellent sub performance can't have helped his chances.
Guti made Real Madrid into a proper side after he came on, rather like I remember Makelele doing so some years back........

Guti is very inconsistent though. I'm sure Madrid fans get frustrated with him because he can look like a world beater one day and a 4th division player the next. Also Ronaldo has had a nice 4 game run and ever since the Barcelona game Beckham as done very well.

Indeed, else he wouldn't be a bench player.

His hair doesn't help either. My nomination for "worst mop since Fernando Couto".
Also Ronaldo has had a nice 4 game run and ever since the >Barcelona game Beckham as done very well.
I may not be out of line by saying, it seems they finally want to win it, and are giving their all (within their limitations, Raul, Roberto Carlos, Solari etc.), as a team, rather than as Galacticos.
I wouldn't put it past them to win it all, actually.

Ah. Well you must admit he has a very undersized, undernourished look for a man of his height. He always looked as if his energy was sapped somehow.
Nah, it's just an example of how low Marca will stoop to get a>better story than AS. It must've been a slow news day...
*LOL* You know your insider-Spanish stuff too well, kudos!
You know, I think ever since Solari got his contract renewed his>performance has been sandbagging it.
What a great word, so descriptive. I will steal it from "you".
<snip good Guti recap>
Still, with Zidane missing Guti is the only real creative player at>Madrid's disposal. Raul needs a vacation, Figo works too hard and has>poor results, Gravesen is stuck in a defensive role and isn't allowed>to play with the big boys up front,
A sadness for Danes everywhere no doubt. I recall how excited you were when first he joined the Galacticos. I wanted to see what he could do too, but as you say, he's not fit in well due to the schematics.
and neither Owen nor Ronaldo will>give the other any assists.
Tell me, do you think the Solari "problem" could be some frustration with Luxemburgo? Not necessarily "Argie-Brasuca" related, but also, I wouldn't discount that.
(Remembers Cuper-Ronaldo)
It would be interesting to see if Luxemburgo will try a lineup with>Zidane on the left and Guti at the offensive-midfield position instead>of Raul against Zaragoza.
Well, there's the theory that the thalassemias are an adaptation by> those populations to malaria, which explains the geographic> distribution.>
That would presumably be the heterozygote that provides some malarial protection. Just like sickle cell anaemia. Also CF, allegedly (heterozygotes survive cholera better ?)
Beta-thalassaemia was the first disease for which gene therapy was attempted, by US scientist called Marvin ? Cline, in the 70s. He couldn't get permission to do the work in the US, so he did it illegally in Italy.
