Setanta Sports Channel

Doan 27 April 2005 06:05:55

Was flicking through the channels on my DirecTV and saw that Setanta Sports
is now available.

Cool. I can now watch WC qualifiers, Rugby etc. Just in time for the Lions
tour of NZ.

Yes, me and the lads on IRC were talking about this last night.

I asked again, and one of them said it's not yet available on anything
other than DirecTV, and he speculated not many people will want to get
it, since it's a pretty steep $11.99 p/m -- for one channel only*. And
the "fare" is bland, he says. During the day it's just Chelsea TV and
MUTV segments -- which sounds great to me!

*I pay $10 for the "Latino Package" which includes something like 28
channels or more, GolTV/ESPN-Deportes, etc., but GLOBO is $19.99 p/m,
so twelve bucks doesn't seem that bad.

At the moment it's month to month.
So thats cool. Especially as some places here were asking for a cover charge
of $10 to frequent their establishment to watch
WC qualifiers or the 6 Nations.

Some of the England qualifiers were > $20 on PPV.

Too expensive imo.

What can they do?

I don't think it'll necessarily be a problem, there'll always be
people who prefer to watch at a bar than at home. IIRC the Setanta
website said the channel was $100 a month for commercial
establishements--they don't have to draw many people to turn a profit.

If this forces them to get rid of the cover charge then I wouldn't mind
watching it in a bar.

Perhaps, but the pub owner here told me the same thing, years ago:
that Setanta didn't give them a choice.
Euro 2004 was about $175 with Comcast for all the games, for the home>viewer, and lasted about 1 month, thus sports bars probably didn't pay>$100/month for sure.

I paid considerably more than that. Almost 390 dollars for all the
games, IIRC.

FWIW there's some talk/speculation on bigsoccer that the big events
will still be bar-only and the residential channel is for the
remaining stuff they can't sell to the bars.
