A header from Christian Gomez off of a centering pass from Jaime Moreno in the 10th minute gave D.C. United an early lead against the run of play. Ailton da Silva equalized in the 52nd minute for the visiting Los Pumas de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México by converting a penalty kick after D.C. United's Jaime Moreno ran into the back of los Pumas' Israel Castro while Castro was collecting a stray pass in the box.
