As you say they were founded in March 1905. A month later they were elected to the Football League, possessing a ground, Stamford Bridge, but having no players, and never having played a match. Their first ever competitive match was in the Football League Division 2, losing to Stockport County.
The FL was desperate to increase the number of clubs from the south - apart from Arsenal and Bristol City there were no clubs in the FL south of Birmingham - hence the indecent haste in electing Chelsea to the FL.
