@news.omne.uk.net:

[snip]
The fall out from Wednesday night's controversial SPL game between> Hearts and Rangers continues, with dramatic news coming from the> Tynecastle club. >
Hearts have revealed they have written to the SFA asking for an> inquiry into the late penalty which gave Rangers all three points. The> club is questioning the integrity of the decision and with a Uefa Cup> place at stake are now pushing for the match to be replayed. >
The referee's assistant said Lee Miller had pulled Rangers Sotirios> Kyriakos down with both arms and a penalty was given. But the club> appears to be prepared to challenge this all the way. They have not> taken legal advice yet, but if this attempt fails then they are> prepared to look at all the alternatives. Immediately after the game> Alex McLeish conceded that the penalty was a soft one. Of course he> has not had a chance to react to the news coming from Hearts, but now> that the dust has settled - at least a little - they have looked at> video footage of the incident again.>
Rangers manager Alex McLeish said: "We've slowed it down a hundred> times and there was definitely contact, so what he's seen is a player> making a foul on another player and awarding a penalty which Sotirios> reacted pretty angrily about so I've no reason to doubt the player and> we believe in what we've watched it was a penalty.">
What Rangers are trying to do is put this matter to rest as quickly as> possible. With the title race looking likely to go right down to the> wire, all the Ibrox side want to concentrate on now is the visit of> Inverness Caley tomorrow. >
Hearts on the other hand have a long way to go before they can put> this one behind them. Forward Saulius Mikoliunas has been asked to> appear before the SFA's disciplinary committee for this outburst. That> will take place a week on Tuesday. The club has also been asked to> attend to explain why objects were thrown onto the pitch, including a> coin which appeared to hit Paul Hartley.

As an aside, this looks remarkably like what happened yesterday at the
Bundesliga game between Nürnberg and Borussia Dortmund.

A totally horrendous referee lost his head, awarding no less than three
highly debatable penalties (*two* of which happened in the last five
minutes).

The first one (awarded to Nürnberg) happened when a player was dragged
down, but the challenge started several metres outside the penalty area.
Bundesliga topscorer Mintal shot low towards the left corner, amazing
save by Borussia's keeper (this was at 0-1 Dortmund).

After Nürnberg had equalised (Mintal making amends), a penalty was
dreamed up as a defender came in front of an attacker and cleared, with
the attacker falling over the defender in the process. Cantaluppi was red
carded in the process, as he continued to protest after the penalty was
scored (he had a yellow card previously).

So, just minutes before full time, a ball was sent into the Borussia
area, a defender put a hand on the shoulder of an attacker, he duly fell
down as a sack of potatoes. New penalty! Wörns was shown having a laugh
at the referee, just shaking his head in disbelief. This time Vittek took
the penalty, and it was equalised.

Controversy didn't stop, however. A minute or so into extra time, Mintal
deliberately stopped a counter attack, he was furious with the ref and
refused to give away the ball. He should have been yellow carded, and
thus sent off as he had one from before. Two angry Borussia players
charged him, one took the ball while the other threw him to the ground
(and thus he should have been sent off as well). Amazingly, the ref did
nothing but talk, and only gave a warning after the Borussia goalie ran
40 metres to charge him. The match ended in several brawls, and although
it should at least been 5 minutes added, the ref stopped it at two and a
half. I guess he didn't dare being out there anymore...

Having seen several Bundesliga matches this season, I'm at times very
appalled with the standard of refereeing. Some refs seems to lose the
plot in matches, especially those who allow too much physical play in the
first half (as this one did).

Another strange thing I've noticed, is that very few minutes are added on
in Bundesliga matches. Even after second halves with brawls, many cards,
lots of stoppage and six subsitutes, only one or two minutes are added.
Is this a policy in the Bundesliga or something?
