Watching the matter as an external casual observer, I do believe that the prediction of the Guardian's editor is probabily a bit exhagerated. Any other comment?

That's not an "editor", that's Steven "Seething" Wells, whose stock-in-trade is being wildly over the top. He's more Hunter S Thompson than New York Times, which is to say.
Let's quote: "America's homegrown sports, like the genetically unique fauna of some long-isolated island, have no natural defences against the soccer plague. And - like the Dodo, the Tasmanian Tiger and the Passenger Pigeon - baseball, basketball and gridiron are all doomed to extinction."
"Inside the snorting, steroid-swollen, padded and armoured behemoth of George Bush's America - there's a gayer, girlier and more socialist America struggling to get out. And, (like John Kerry), it plays soccer. "
I think it's great fun.
Ciao, SM, likes the gal in himself *g* -- http://www.gourockviews.co.uk Christian Ziege: "Vom HSV lernen heiГџt Siegen lernen."

Or, to put it another way, he is to the Guardian what Joel Stein (in his Q&A mode) is to Time magazine.

Well he ends it:
"I think they're right. The rest of the world has been worried for some time that America will try and change soccer. The truth is that soccer is changing America. Socialist soccerphiles should take heart. The Presidential election does not tell the whole story. Inside the snorting, steroid-swollen, padded and armoured behemoth of George Bush's America - there's a gayer, girlier and more socialist America struggling to get out. And, (like John Kerry), it plays soccer."
Which would have been better for him to start it with so we could immediately know it was fear-based nonsense akin to the shite that Jim Rome spouts constantly...
