Is there another team in this whole Euro qualifier thing who has had
more injuries than England?
Germany. Always between 5 and 10 players out, including our best
midfielders (Ballack, Frings, Schneider).
OTOH, perhaps the numbers should be related at least somewhat to number of
totally available players for a country?
Why? There are roughly 25 players in a usual squad and together with those who are "close" to the NT in some sense, for instance due to injuries of others, you get a total of up to ~35 possible NT players. These number are always the same, for all countries, big or small ones.

So, you are saying Sweden (for example) wouldn't hurt more than Germany (for example) if their respective five (for example) best (by some agreed standard) players are injured? You don't think Germany has an easier task finding five replacements of international standards?
I guess I should be flattered...

"International standards" -- yes, that's easier for a country with ~80 million inhabitants than for a country with ~8 million inhabitants. But finding adequate replacement -- no, for Germany, that's just as hard as it is for Sweden. If we have to replace Ballack and Frings and Schneider in our midfield, then this is a bigger problem than what Sweden will ever have now or in the near future.
