More snow

Maris 20 April 2005 14:14:18
It seems that there were huge snowfalls over the weekend in several
parts of the Alps, Megeve, a low lying resort, received 40 cms of
snow. Le Grand Bornand, just down the road, also received 37 cms of
snow. Conditions, according to the Ski Club of GB, are 'superb'.
Temperatures are hovering around zero. It is continuing to snow.
Unfortunately, in the St Gervais Megeve ski area only 3 out of 87
lifts are open (St Gervais has already closed for the season). I am
tempted to just jump in my car!

I was ski-touring from Saturday 2nd April until Saturday 16th April
(mainly doing the Wildstrubel Haute Route from Les Diablerets through to
Kandersteg) but interrupted for a couple of days in the middle when we
bailed out in bad weather to Lenk and then went over to St Luc for some
on-piste skiing a few days (the last couple of days of their season so
the resort was shutting down around us) before rejoining our Haute Route
via Cranz Montane.

At the end of our vacation we were in Argentiere on the Saturday 16th
skiing in white out conditions on the Grande Montet, and then when we
woke up on the Sunday morning to drive back to the UK we had to dig our
car out of about 20cm of snow all over. The snow was covering the road
and the driving conditions were very bad all the way down to, and past,
Geneve (we have a Subaru Forester but even with that the conditions were
very bad and I experienced one major four wheel slide on a steep and
winding section of the road between Argentiere and Chamonix) . The
autoroute was blocked for several hours since many vehicles did not have
chains or winter tyres and it eventually took us until 2pm in the
afternoon before we were out of the Alps and onto roads covered in rain
rather than snow. With so much snow late in the season, and on a firm
base, my guess is that avalanche conditions will be very bad as soon as
the weather warms up again.

Indeed it was. Some real bad ones in EK this week.
