Apparently some people believe that "spammers, telemarketers and psychos"
depend on clueless Useneteers to ferret out information freely avaiable on
the web.

Well, psychos, maybe.

For the better part of the past year, Indian batting chased down 17
consecutive scores, some of them above 250-300, some of them without
someone named Tendulkar in the line up, setting a new world record in the
process. Chappell was the coach, and we were experimenting with the batting
order. A few GAALIs were busy sniping in their impotent frustration at
Chappell as he had finally gotten a non-playing captain kicked out of the
squad.

Now, the Indian batting (except in the last match) has had a brain freeze
lasting about 5 months. There have been repeated losses, and suddenly an
entire bandwagon, led expectedly by the charter members of the GAALI club,
is pointing at Chappell's coaching and experimentation for the problems and
actually celebrating recent Indian losses (that should say it all about
what comes first for them, doesn't it ?).

Excuse me ? Most Indian batsmen are batting at the same spot as they have
been for a while, except Dravid and Pathan. Our bowling attack, including
Harbhajan Singh, who has played beautifully over the past year, has played
its heart out, and converted some of the disastrous losses into near losses
or even some wins.

The problem, bozos, is the form of the Indian batsmen, not foreign coaches,
not "experimentation", not raw youngsters, etc. Dravid, for instance, could
have been counted on to score a 50 every other match for the early part of
this year. His form has suffered, but he is on his way back, as his recent
scores indicate. Sehwag's troubles, often hidden by the Yuvraj-Kaif duo,
are now out in the open - there are no easy solutions there. Pathan has
been the most shocking failure of all - his batting average has nearly
halved and his bowling average nearly doubled in the past 6 months. He is
burnt out or / and sorted out. Raina, scored a few good scores early, but
now forgets how to bat when he reaches 20.

The solution is simple - replace Pathan and Raina, and be patient - bad
batting form, especially of all our players, cannot last forever. Its
contrary to laws of probability. And it might be a good idea to draft in
Uthappa and Kaif somewhere.

I am usually a pessimist regarding Indian cricket, but I think that the
current team has a better chance than any Indian team since 1987 of winning
the World Cup. No, that is not a prediction, but a recognition of its sheer
quality.
