Nice!

I got a taste of the Tatrys spending two days in Zakopane. Looks like an
excellent place for mountain adventures!

Are there huts for lodging in the winter? I was under the impression that
there are huts for hikers in summer.

There are regular shelters. Just 8 of them, all together.
But they are within the walking distance from each other... They are
quite cheap, except more expensive - the Kalatowki
(http://www.kalatowki.com.pl/ang/str_gl_ang.html) which is rather a
hotel.

Nice overthere, is that all in Poland?

Yep...
Can you tell us a littlebit about > skitouring possibilities in Poland? Or are there any websites?

Well, basically speaking all our southern borders lead along the
mountains.
http://www.ga.com.pl/zima1.htm
http://golek.dobrebopolskie.com/
http://www.pbase.com/mirekd581

The most attractive BC/skitouring areas are:

-Beskidy Mountains http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beskidy - the most
interesting parts are Turbacz and Babia Gora.

-Bieszczady Mountains - (Eastern Karpaty) very vast area on the border
with Ukraine

Both Beskidy and Bieszczady are appropriate for light BC, too.

-Karkonosze Mountains (part of Sudety mountains on the border with Czech
Rep), http://www.samotnia.com.pl/e/sam-e.htm#zima
http://www.brokerzy.com/gallery/sniegi_karkonoszy

The most 'alpine' mountains are
-Tatry Mountains (Tatry Zachodnie
(Western) and Tatry Wysokie (High)). Moreover it is only few hours
driving from Krakow international airport.

And so on...
Use google
:-)

This season was somehow strange. There was too much snow in the
mountains hence backcountry/skitouring was almost impossible. I spent
only few days telemarking in Beskidy.

On the other hand from January, 15 to March, 15 there was good snow in
the lowland (around Warsaw where I live).

But I went to Suwalki region (Wizajny, Gory Sudawaskie), in the
north-east part of Poland, on the border with Lithuania. I have never
been there before.
It is hilly (post-glacial) and reputably the coldest part of Poland
(the lowest recorded winter temperature was -38 C).

Tomorrow I am going to Tatry for a week. The winter season lasts until
beginning of May.

Please advise ski areas frequented by our Pope. I was in Poland during
WW II but much too dangerous to think of skiing then. Often wondered
where he skied but never asked him.

I am 21 days older than the Pope, who was born May 18, 1920 near
Warsaw.. I was born April 27, 1920, Detroit, MI USA.

Thoughts appreciated thank you,

Thanks for the info. Enjpyed seeing the commentary and photos.]

What is a "troll" ? We just don't lnow.

Why is the disconcerting background used in the URL ? Makes it more
difficult to view the msgs/pics clearly.

Again, thank you

Are you a troll???

Nevertheless... he was skiing in Beskidy (close to his home town)... and
later on in Tatry (Kasprowy area and Dolina (Valley) Chocholowska).
As a Pope - in Dolomiti and Val d'Aosta...

BTW The Pope was born in Wadowice which is in south-west of Krakow close
to the mountains. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wadowice
