108 inches Lal_truckee 01:59:03
 at the stake.

Skiing's been good - had surface in the morning. Had the 215 DH skis out
for a few runs this am while waiting for the bowls to soften - fast skis
but they don't respond at all until maybe 50 mph and up, so you need
some room. But at speed they act as if a switch was thrown and settle
into a smooth groove. I put them away when the crowds showed (all 5
people) and went back looking for slush and crud on the P30s.

Broke my dam adjustable poles between some rocks on the way to Beaver
Bowl - borrowed a pair for the rest of the day. When returned home got
the micrometer out and measured diameters of basement poles. We have 3
BD adjustable (one pair in pieces) and an ancient Leki lawisond probe
pole and maybe a dozen other non adjustables. All have different
diameters, so I couldn't put together a pair of good poles out of some
junkers, leaving me with the kid's good adjustable pair as a replacement
pair for tomorrow. Someone close to Black Diamond and all these other
brands should explain why they change shaft diameter with every pole
released. Just to screw us up?

moonlight Lal_truckee 02:55:32
Just returned from the Alpine moonlight bonfire, marshmallow roast, BBQ,
and full moon ski. Including an Alpenhorn soloist up on the hill and a
bar band in the lodge.

Fortunately for future pleasures the weather was preparing to snow again
tonight, so an overcast came in about 5 after a blue sky ski day.
Even more fortunately a gap in the clouds formed and persisted exactly
where the full moon rose.

A good time was had by all. Finished off with Peppermint Schnapps
infused cocoa by the fireplace.

great skiing Lal_truckee 06:20:50
Spring has sprung, corn abounds, wear your sun screen or burn your nose off.

Having some wonderful days recently. Hell, wonderful days all season long.

Still 135 inches at the mid mountain stake - checked it myself yesterday.

Kick bike? Gr 20:26:14
I was stuck some time ago when leaning on a full shopping cart and
running along, how much it feels like gliding. I am thinking a kick bike
(or something else??) may also give that feeling. After trying "off
road" big tire roller skis last year with very poor glide (like going up
hill all the time) I think it may be time to try something like this.
What are the various types if wheeled things in this category that will
work well on streets, compacted dirt and stone dust surfaces?

Roadside snow stratigraphy at Lake Tahoe Aes 18:33:27
Interesting roadside snow stratigraphy (I thought that should be
"stratiography" but Webster's says "stratigraphy") at Lake Tahoe at the
end of this winter.

If you drive along roads where big snow-blowing snow plows, instead of
pushing snow back onto the banks at the sides of the road, have cut away
the snow deposits on the shoulders, leaving vertical walls of snow, you
see similar striking stratigraphy all around the Lake.

You get an edge view of many very distinct tree-ring-like horizontal
layers of snow, typically an inch or so thick, such as might arise from
some rippled or toothed edging on the snow removal machinery, but I
think do not.

I've not stopped to examine or count these layers carefully, but
starting at the ground level there may be a dozen or more such layers,
which I suspect trace back to a series of daily storms in late December.
It seems reasonable to assume that differences in daytime and nighttime
temperatures will give a primarily daily character to these layers.

Then there's a single very distinct, quite thin, dirty black layer,
which I assume comes when the snowfall stops for a period of multiple
days and dirt thrown up by passing cars and maybe falling pine needles
pile up on the snow surface.

Then on top of this another 12" to 18" of daily strata, representing
probably the January storms that passed through the area; then another
black layer; and another series of thin layers from February. Above
this, nearing the top of the existing snow, things tend to get messy,
because the top layers have been melting, or even gotten rained on a
little, and the top edge of the vertical bank has curled over.

Every once in a while there will be a roadside structure of some sort --
a low stone wall, a raised culvert, even just a roadside bush -- and one
can see all of these layers "hump up" and curve continuously over that
point.

I suppose all of the above is something that observant people see every
winter, in lots of other places at well, and I've just not noticed
before. However, the phenomenon seems to be particularly distinctive
this winter, which may be due to (a) the series of distinctive and
prolonged storms we had here this winter, and (b) perhaps increased use
of snow-blowing machinery, as contrasted to older snow plows that just
push snow off the road into big banks on the shoulders.

Anyone have pointers to more formal studies of these stratigraphic
records?

Re: skate rollerski length question Guest 08:51:58
You might write or call and ask why their recommendation. I suspect
the more important question is wheel speed. Slow is relative and I'm
not familiar with Clayton's slower wheels vs. Marwe 610s, but the risk
in general is that skating is relatively high intensity and thus
it's harder to keep your heart rate at an endurance level (L1) the
slower the wheels. I've read that top skiers prefer a faster pair for
longer workouts.

if I'm interested in technique and balance rather than speed? thanks
in advance. The websites I've looked at recommend the 60cm frames for
"tall men and advanced skiers." My suspicion = not enough difference
to matter.

Has anyone built a sledge or pulk for towing your gear while xc
skiing?
Just putting the fitting touches on a pulk I'll be using during a Ski
Patrol Mountain Travel and Rescue course. Here's my write-up on it:
Doesn't address your tracked trail requirement.
Thanks BG, that's useful site for building a pulk, I wish I would have
seen it sooner. I'm using the 7' pvc pipes for my person to sled
connection. I figure if it gets too cold I'm not going, but if I'm out
there and then it gets cold....

It seems a whole lot of folk use PVC without a problem ... Maybe carry
a simple repair kit with some kind of sleeve that could be
glued/taped/clamped over a break. OTOH, I plan to use a tow line as a
back-up to the tracers.

Funny thing, the Erapro sled is made about 20 minutes from my house
yet I only found out about from you.

Ain't that the way it is. I spent considerable time looking for a local
source, then ended up ordering it from REI.

I'm going to add some suspenders to my waist belt as I discovered that
there is a significant downward pull on the belt that had me hiking it
up every once in a while.

I've heard of that. One solution I heard was to attach it to a day
pack. I'll keep that in mind during sea-trails!

Good luck.

SLC conditions as good as they look? Helibrdr 19:32:56
Okay - taking the boys for spring break back to the SLC are next week. Last
year we were lucky to have runs open due to the lack of snow and most of PC
was already closed. This year looks to be MUCH different with the huge bases
and still snowing from what I can see. 3 days on snow - suggestions? BTW-
Boys and I are boarders (sorry folks) but they DO NOT side slip down runs or
sit in the middle of them! In fact they love nothing more than a bunch of
powder and tree runs.

My thoughts -Snowbird, Snowbasin, and then Solitude (Honeycomb Canyon)

Any other input (other then learn to ski?) ;-)
