| Hoffman's High Hemologin Values ADK Skier 22:52:23 |
| | Does any of our Scandinavian friends know about Christian Hoffman being recently banned from racing for 14 days because of high hemoglobin values. I was reading Jenex's website and they mentioned this. I know he finished in the top 3 recently in a World Cup event. It reminds me of 1999 when the Austrians with Hoffman and Botvinow beat the Norwegians in the World Championship Relay. I smelled a rat then and at Salt Lake too. Hoffman and Botwinow won Olympic Medals there I believe in the 30km Free. This prevented Bjorndalen the Biathlete from medaling along with another Norwegian.

| Stockholm-Falun scoring system and the WC season victors - did it
work? Guest 19:59:50 |
| | Kowalczyk overcame Majdic to win the overall WC title because she got the 200 bonus points for the Stockholm-Falun series. Not that Kowalczyk - and in the men's case, Cologna - didn't perform deservingly, but is that really a fair way to do things? Is crowning an overall champion for the week meaningful, or does it distort the season-long competition and its rhythms? It does seem to me that the bonus system rewards that which has already been accounted for in scoring of the individual races, while at the same time punishing those whom for whatever reason were unable or preferred not to complete the entire series. Is this carrot - the bonus pts - necessary to entice as many as possible to compete and to keep the final results interesting, or is it just an gimmick to market the sport to the public, irrespective of its effects on the skiers? I think it's fair to ask if it even worked on its own logic, considering that the victors were virtually decided before the last race.

| Worn Rotefella Boots Neil 17:03:08 |
| | Dear All, just back from an excellent trip to Norway. One problem, in heavy snow, very difficult to turn in, I had a problem with my boots coming out of my bindings. I use a pair of leather boots of I suspect traditional Norwegian welt construction and traditional 3 pin Rotefella binding. My question is, how can I tell if the 3 holes in the toe of the boot are worn. The rubber part has been enlarged towards the tip of the shoe and the metal part underneath seems to becoming elliptical. Could this be the problem? Tomorrow, I will see if I can clean out the holes. They may be trapping dirt. Any thoughts? Thanks, Neil

| sintered bases, radioactive wax etc Runcyclexcski@Yahoo.Com 16:05:58 |
| | Were there any experiments done to actually show how much scineted bases absorb wax and how deep the wax pentetrates? Like, melt wax, add same radioactive label to the wax, and see how much label is retained after scraping, brushing, skiing (yeah, California, radioactive snow, you will like that) and may be how deeply the wax penetrates? And/or microscope imaging to estimate the size of voids between P-tex particles? Different base materials etc (extruded versus sintered)? Just curious.

| Teichman A Really Slow Starter. ADK Skier 10:19:12 |
| | I was checking out the results from Falun on the FIS site. In the 3.3km prologe Teichman was down just under 20 seconds at the 1.2km mark to Markus Hellner. At this point he was way down the rankings. I find it amazing this guy can decide to put the hammer down, close the gap and win a 3.3km prologe after such a slow start. That shows a lot of confidence.

| Casual nowax skiing technique? Sand away some grip-zone? Jeff Potter 01:14:33 |
| | Are there any special points about getting best performance out of recreational-type (wider) nowax skis in a casual setting? Any trick to get them to glide better?
A guy emailed me saying that he finds he has to weight the heel to get them to move out---if he keeps weight over his whole foot the ski won't glide much.
Is the paper test still appropriate for nowax skis? Should the grip area be off the floor when half body weight is applied?
Has anyone tried sanding off some excess nowax grip zone if it goes beyond the kick zone suggested by the paper test or seems to be dragging the glide?

| BC skiing/camping curing a snow storm Runcyclexcski@Yahoo.Com 18:56:45 |
| | Excited about my 1st BC ski trip to the Sierras last months, my buddies and myself are going again - this time for 4 days. Skiing from Mammoth lakes to June lake. Mostly between 9000 and 12000 at all times.
But... there are 2 feet of new snow predicted during one of the days. Sunny and warm in between. Since this involves 3 people flying in from different parts of the country, we are reluctant to cancel and are still game. Are we insane or is it doable? We could just wait out the storm in the tent.

| chevron structures Lo Dup 13:05:55 |
| | Where's the science behind chevron structures ?
A "diagonal" structure has certainly an effect to create water droplets and broke them into smaller droplets to glide onto. But I don't imagine a ski acting like a wheel and evacuating water all base long. Evacuating water is perhaps not desirable at all..
What about the new Swix T405 rolling (expensive) tool ? does it produce real "diagonal" structure/imprint or are they common straight lines with a back offset, giving a diagonal look.

| Rollerski Binding Placement Highpeaksnordic 04:53:58 |
| | All -
The skiable snow is melting rapidly and I'm already thinking about summer training. I wanted to see if anyone here has experimented with different binding placements on rollerskis. I always thought that bindings were mounted just like skis - at the balance point. Jenex, however, recommends mounting skate bindings with the heel as close to the rear wheel as possible.
Any one have any other (skate or classic) experience?

| Narrow, metal edge, waxless, 157 cm X-country skis? Aes 01:50:40 |
| | One of my wife's Fischer Adventure Revolution 157 cm cross country skis has lost an edge. She's very fond of that particular model and size (even though what we mostly do is just shuffle along on groomed trails or backcountry forest roads -- no downhill turns), but it's no longer made, and eBay listings are thin to nonexistent.
Anyone have a pointer to a narrow, metal edge, waxless, 157 cm X-country ski of any brand, new or used?
Thanks.

| Winona Forest Tourathon ADK Skier 00:58:43 |
| | Can anyone who did this years Tourathon tell us how flat the 10+ race loop was. It's great they are trying to turn things around for the Tourathon. Also I was interested to know if this will be the site for next years race. Hopefully it wasn't a double pole fest and allowed some striding.

| Battery powered XC skis with air suction for traction? Sms 01:09:59 |
| | On Sunday on Glacier Point Road in Yosemite, there was a guy skiing along and his skis were making strange noises. It was like he was playing a video game while skiing. He pointed to his skis and said that they had a powered traction device which created some sort of vacuum on uphills (for traction) and reversed it for gliding, pushing air out through ports in the bottom, and that was the source of the annoying noice.
I searched on-line and couldn't find anything about this. One thing about him was that he was _really_ slow, so whatever the thing on his skis was, it didn't seem to help with speed. Maybe it was something he constructed himself.

| FS. Naxo nx11 Alpine Touring Binding. BNIB. Powderhound100@Gmail.Com 21:35:13 |
| | I got some naxo's cheap at a deal last year for my brother, hoping he would get into backcountry skiing. He is lazy and would rather just ski in the resort, so I have these up for sale. They are brand new in box, have never been used. They are size large (320-354mm) These are great bindings to use for backcountry, or slackcountry when your just going out of bounds a little bit. I can pass them on to you for $250. These retail for almost $400.
Naxo are positioning the nx11 as an all mountain binding aimed at the Freerando market. In reality this means that it weights 100 grammes less than the Naxo nx21 and has one less DIN setting, the highest being 12 (note: the official DIN standard for ski bindings stops at 12). It features a downhill lock mode to stop it switching into tour mode and weighs a claimed 2150 grammes per pair including brakes. The 40mm above the ski ride height gives better edging in steeps and when carving.

| 2009 Tourathon feedback? Skivol 23:42:51 |
| | The 29th Tourathon was last Saturday 3/14/09. From a volunteer's perspective it was a great success. I would like to hear from the skiers with any feedback they care to share. Electronic scoring was a new addition this year.. did you like that? What about the trail conditions and course design? Thanks.

| Fuzzing up your old skates Chris Cole 18:55:54 |
| | Hi all,
Has anyone ever tried making a pair of "classic" skis by scratching the hell out of the underfoot zone on a pair of firmly flexed skates?
Just curious if one can make their own "fuzzies" for near-zero conditions from skates. I've yet to find a pair of patterned classics that actually keep the pattern off the snow when I ski...
Cheers, Chris

| Classic sprints in Trondheim: Simply amazing! Terje Mathisen 11:14:52 |
| | I have just watched all the final races from Trondheim, in order to see if Petter Northug could (for the first time in his life) qualify for the finals and thereby gains some points in his race to overtake Cologna and grab the overall world cup trophy.
The swiss racer also hasn't been a classic sprinter, but today he managed to get the 3rd best qualification time, beaten by Petter by just 0.07 seconds.
I.e. from never getting to the top 30 to 2nd best!
In the quarter finals they both managed to qualify, meeting up in the semis, where Petter was in the top two and Dario was 0.2 seconds back but qualified on time.
In the finals Mr Sprint this year, Ola Vigen Hattestad once again showed his mettle, winning on the final stretch, but Petter was next and the Dario came 5th.
The difference means that Petter gained 35 points, so about 50 points separate them before the final events, including a 50k classic mass start, with 2x25 points for intermediate sprints.
THis will be an exciting finish to the season!

| The NY BREIA Trails-Out Of This World! ADK Skier 05:56:14 |
| | NY skiers if you're burned out on Mohonk, Lake Placid, Prospect, or Garnet Hill you have to check out the BREIA Trails in Boonville, NY. 4 trail systems and vistas which are mind boggling. The view of the Adirodacks and Tug Hill Plateau are to die for. I skied the Jackson Hill trails today and did 50km. The warming huts are gorgeous Adirondack Rustic with wood waiting to be burned in the fireplaces. The place is free and they have two Piston Bulleys. Check out their web site. There is a rumor they may not groom next season so get out there. They have a web site. Do a google search for BREIA Trails.

| Gatineau park question Steve 17:40:45 |
| | Was wondering why there seems to be a notable absence of trails in the middle part of park? I'm referring to the area between Meech and Phillipe - theres another lake in there (name?).
Currently, if I want to incorporate North and South parts of the park into a ski, seems trail 36 is the only way to do that. There is the old trail I've taken past McInstry that gets you over to Lusk (arguably the best 'backwoods' trail in the park) but its a non-skater and gets me a little far north. I've often wanted to do a loop that incorporates Herridge and McInstry. (ie. start at P10 - 1 to Mcinstry, down the escarpment over that lake to Herridge and back along 50/36... that would make for a very cool skating loop!
My biased opinion, but if they opened that middle section up a bit it would make the best nordic ski center in the world even better!
