Differential Diagnosis: Sprained vs. Broken Wrist

Ellen Arnold 25 May 2005 05:49:37
OK, all you folks out there who "aren't a doctor but play one on rssir."

This afternoon I fell while doing CW back crossovers. I still don't know
exactly how; it wasn't the dreaded "click of death" but all of a sudden I
was off my edge and on my butt. Well, actually, I would probably have been
better off had I been on my butt ;-) but instead I landed on my hip, left
arm outstretched and hitting the ice wrist first.

I skated another 20 minutes or so while the pain got progressively worse,
then finally got off and started icing it. I stopped on the way home to buy
an Ace bandage and have since alternated between the two while keeping my
forearm elevated as much as possible.

I am in rather excruciating pain (just took two naproxen so hopefully that
will help SOON) and my left arm is essentially useless. Although nothing is
obviously deformed, I do have some swelling.

I am assuming that what I have is "just" a terrifically bad sprain, but I am
wondering: how would I know if it was a broken bone, short of having an
x-ray which i will probably do tomorrow if it's not any better?

When I called my coach to inform her that I might miss my lesson tomorrw,
she said "you know, you can still skate with a broken wrist." Well, probably
so, but at this point I can't imagine pulling on my tights, lacing up my
skates or even, for that matter, fastening my bra ;-).

Thanks for any info,
Ellen (not bad for one-handed typing, eh?)

I do more than just play a doctor ;) There is no way to tell other than an
x-ray and it may not even show up for a month! Get an x-ray tomorrow,
repeat it or get a bone scan if the first is negative but you aren't better
in a month. Broken wrists are very common in skating. The danger is a rare
fracture that cuts off the blood to the wrist bone above it, Then if the
bone dies, it'll hurt for the rest of your life, no treatment works. Bummer
to say the least. Get the x-ray, get the x-ray.

Hmm, not a doctor but a vet. If you were a dog I'd want an x-ray...

Owwww! Poor you, what a nasty thing to happen.

The worst fall I ever had was just before I started lessons, and landed
totally on my left arm - pretended nothing was wrong, but it was several
days before I could wash my face with both hands, or brush my hair.....
I don't think I *did* do any real damage - except to my nerve, which is
why, ten years later, I still can't do a 3-turn solo with any speed!
I am assuming that what I have is "just" a terrifically bad sprain, but I am>wondering: how would I know if it was a broken bone, short of having an>x-ray which i will probably do tomorrow if it's not any better?

I don't think there is any reliable way. In fact, if you've broken a
bone, you may well be better off (unless you've broken it in a very
awkward place) than if you have torn a tendon - you will heal more
quickly. Do take it to the doctor, though - quite apart from anything
else, they will be able to give you better support for it than you can
buy over-the-counter. I'm sure you could have a removable splint if you
wished, rather than a plaster cast (if one is needed) - and they can
give you stronger painkillers, too!

Some folks do skate with a broken wrist - I've known several - and
others don't. Again, I've known several. If you do, you do need help
with getting your skates on!

I do wish you better!

My experience with doctors is that they always ask what hurts. Then> they ask if it was trauma. IF I say yes. They x-ray me immediately.> I do not recall a doctor ever guessing about a break.>
