Re: rinks in northern england and scotland

I can comment on some of the cities in that list. Manchester now has
no ice AFAIAA,the Altringham rink there closed, I don't really know
the place at al thoughl. Liverpool used to have ice, sadly no longer,
it's an interesting city to visit, check out the the dockland area,
lots of maritime history there, interesting buildings and a museum

See www.albertdock.com

Locals are called scousers, watch out for the sense of humour! I used
to be one and can give you more info on the city if you need it. Best
ice option near Liverpool is Deeside Leisure Centre at Queensferry,
just over the Welsh Border south of the city, maybe about 15 miles
from the city itself. This is an excellent rink, very high quality
ice. But of course later public sessions can be a zoo. We had a
great skate there at a Monday morning session, whole rink to ourselves
for a while. See the (long) URL:

There is ice at Blackburn, Lancashire, just NW of Liverpool and also
near Manchester, I can't find a website for them though, sure I've
seen one...

Glasgow, great city, seems much more *fun* than Edinburgh to me (ducks
awaiting flames from Scotland), a very lively place. They have ice (a
small rink) up there at Greenock which I know a little, its a fairly
quiet place with some maritime history, not much else to do there,
and its about 15 miles W of the city. Never skated there.

So, I've already told poor husband that I'll be bringing my skates.>(This gives me much joy, as I won't be entirely bereft; and gives>husband good ammunition for teasing.) I've googled the National Ice>Skating Assoc. of UK. Does anyone know where else I could look for info>on rinks, practice times, and/or spring public sessions?>
Of course, I would love to hear about places we could visit, too. We>are huge Anglophiles, but have spent most of our time in S. England>(London and Oxbridge). Any thoughts, suggestions, etc. will be greatly>appreciated.>
Thanks,>Tiger>
The Sheffield rink is fabulous! (www.icesheffield.com)

I'm off to Dumfries tonight with my daughter, but web details on their
rink are, um, sparse. (Like I don't have any apart from the address from
the NISA site).

Just a comment: I've been told skating sessions on some of the Scottish
rinks are few and far between as most of the time is dedicated to
curling.

One place I've not been myself yet but really want to (and have had it
recommended) is Hadrian's Wall - Housesteads in particular.

Have fun! (and next time you're going to be in Oxford, shout here first,
there are several Oxford skaters on here).

Catherine.

Masses of ice in the suburbs, with rinks in Paisley, East Kilbride, and
lots of other places. Many rinks are used primarily for curling, which
takes precedence even over ice hockey in Scotland! But there are masses
of rinks in southern Scotland - finding ice on them is another
matter.....

It occurs to me that while skating in the northern UK is more than
feasible, anyone who does it either needs a car or will explore some
of the more obscure parts of our public transport system. What went
wrong for those city centre rinks I wonder, after all there is
more/cheaper space available to accomodate them than round these parts
(London area).

Steve, honey, thank you for all the info already. I love the sense of>humor - when I can follow the accent! All we hear around here is the>BBC (I need my daily fix, you see) - but that doesn't prepare you for>that unforgettable N. England patois...

And scouse is really quite unique amongst northern England patois
variations. Guess you know what the Beatles sound like...
Fortunately I don't really speak it these days unless I'm really angry
and swearing at someone, when I revert. I suspect there are people at
the BBC who would need an interpreter in the unlikely event they were
to visit Liverpool.

Oh yeah, we are renting a car>(have to visit a couple of my relatives who live far off the beaten>paths), so that's good. We can nose around/explore.

I think that is good if you want to be able to skate easily. If you
go to Deeside from Liverpool you'll experience the delights of the
Mersey Tunnel, and go "under the water" to The Wirral, which is full
of posh people. Follow signs for the M53 Motorway (you'll need the New
Tunnel, there are 2), then for Queensferry.
But why is the national rink of Wales near Liverpool? Does that have a>historic reason?

I think the rink at the capital Cardiff (Wales' only other rink)
makes that claim actually. I think Deeside's website uses wordplay
more than a little, obviously a bit of competition there ;-). But
Cardiff faces closure, so I guess it all could change. We'll be
skating Deeside Monday Bank Holiday morning next, 30th May, as we
visit family up there, am really looking forward to that fast ice.

That's a nice rink you have there, you are lucky. Wish I still lived
that way! I read about how they spent a fortune on dehumidfiers to
help keep the ice perfect, so different to our rink with it's
condensation and drips, you see the ice going off before your eyes. I
was also impressed by how level they surface it, not a a slope
anywhere. Alexandra Palace near us has lovely fast ice, but it's like
the alps in comparison. Nice to see the work of real perfectionists.
