What a wonderful article. A perfect assessment of Kwan. She is truly a
dinosaur!

Somehow I knew we'd hear from you, bbarlou. (Chana should be showing up
anytime now.)

If that is the case, I want to be dinosaur! She is lovely, and I am
thrilled she still wants to compete!

I agree. She's a few years younger than I am, yet in my profession I'm
seen as a "baby." Twenty-four may be on the old *side* for ladies'
figure skating, but it certainly isn't over the hill! Maria Butyrskaya
won her first and *only* world title at twenty-six, after all, and
Nancy Kerrigan was 24 at the 94 Olympics where she skated her best ever
program. Sheesh.

What so many people forget is that skating is a sport. Whoever shows
up to compete in a qualifying competition should be able to compete.
Whoever does the best at that competition should be able to move on to
the next level of competition. That's how almost all sports work.
Skating shouldn't be any different just because it's beautiful to
watch.

While this reporter is obviously knowledgeable, he does show a few
problems here:

1. He perpetuates the myth that Kwan's skate in the '98 Olympics was
"tentative and uninspired." That's Monday-morning quarterbacking to
explain her loss; it was not evident during her actual performance. Nor
did Tara Lipinski win because of her "bounce and megawatt smile." This
guy seems to know something about skating. He should know better than
to think skating outcomes are determined by bounce and smiles.

2. He should know better than to think--as much as he might like to see
it--that Kwan will quietly step down from competition away from the
media spotlight rather than making a very public exit with the
spotlight of the world upon her. Whatever happens, Michelle Kwan is not
going gentle into that good night. Heck, she's been around too long to
do that. I think she may actually believe she owes her fans more (even
if she really doesn't)--that she owes it to them to share her
retirement with them on the world's biggest stage. And that ain't the
2005 Worlds.

3. Nothing is set in stone. It really doesn't matter how many female
skaters have proven themselves capable of landing triple axels. Unless
they can do it on a night or two at the Olympics, they aren't
necessarily going to beat Kwan. Granted, they might beat her with other
jumps. But nothing is guaranteed--except I have a feeling that whatever
does happen, Kwan will not embarrass herself. She has too much pride
for that.

So, there's really no need for anyone to go encouraging her to step
dowwn quietly out of the spotlight. She'll do fine, whatever happens.

I found this guy's opinions of the baseball steroid scandal are
interesting, because I can't help but relate that situation to the
situation in figure skating judging. A sport ignoring and denying its
ethical breaches and pretending everything's just dandy and balking
when someone attempts to investigate what is going on? Oh, us skating
fans NEVER heard of such goings-on! *gack* It reminds me of how the FBI
was actually knocking on doors at 2003 worlds and interviewing people
it felt had knowledge of the 2002 SLC judging scandal...and then,
strangely, nothing happened. Hmm.

Let it be known...the silence has lasted long enough...the fans are
rising again, as will soon be evident. Stay tuned.

I disagree. It was evident in her performance -- to me, at least. Not
to the extent that he suggests, perhaps, but it was pretty clear in
that moment that the Michelle Kwan of the long program at the '98
Olympics was a safe, cautious Michelle Kwan, and not someone we have
seen skate with more soul and abandon than in that moment.

And while Tara did not win based on bounce and a smile, I do believe
that part of her win could be chalked up to her "give it all I've got"
attitude. That attitude helped her land the jumps (cheated or not ;-)
and it sold the program in a way Michelle did not sell hers, thereby
affecting both the technical and presentation marks. IMO.

To each his own. I didn't see it that way at the time. Yes, I thought
Michelle went in with more to lose, but I don't know that it made as
big a difference in her skating as so many people said in hindsight. It
all seems like Monday-morningg quarterbacking to me.
