Actually, not at all. Its not uncommon for superb athletes to fall victim to poor genetics in the joints, tendons, and ligaments. I've known a number of superb athletes who've had their careers cut short - no amount of training, preparation, and care and change the fact that some people's bodies just can't take the strain - especially in joints/tendons.

I think it's a bit early to weed out JW fromthe gene pool.
The cause of the shoulder injury during/after the WC was obvious to all, and has kept him out of action for most of the last 15/16. Mths how many players of that size tackle as hard, as often and as fearlessly?
Prior to the shoulder injury what was his injury record like? This would be the measure of how naturally prone o injury he is, he'd been a proffessional athlete for many years before the WC.
It remains to be seen wether that shoulder of his is still up to the job, other injuries have prevented it from being tested too much.

Let us hope that he gets over it during the summer (even if it means no lions for him). Would be an awful shame for such a talent to be wasted for ever.. For us and for himself.

You have got to feel sorry for the guy. He had the world at his feet, and it is slipping away. There have to be doubts about his ability to come back from this. Hope he can make it, the rugby world is better for having players like Wilko fit and playing.

As was stated here right after RWC2003.
It's hardly Nostradamus though. There are only two real options: Wilkinson would come back from injury and he wouldn't.
I didn't see anyone predicting he would suffer from three separate injuries, all of which would keep him out of the game.

Yeah he is good all right, however (barring serious injury) IMHO Daniel Carter will prove over the next 3-5 years to be one of the greatest ever seen at first five( fly half) Lew
