From Sporting Life..........

Ian Millward, Super League's longest-serving coach, has been suspended by St
Helens.

The colourful Australian, one of the most successful coaches in the history
of the club, has been removed from his position ``pending disciplinary
proceedings''.

Millward's assistant coach Dave Rotheram has been placed in temporary charge
of the team, which is preparing for Friday's Powergen Challenge Cup fifth
round tie against York.

The St Helens club are expected to shed more light on the stunning
development at a press conference at Knowsley Road this afternoon.

The shock move is reminiscent of the equally sudden departure of Millward's
predecessor Ellery Hanley, who was sacked five years ago for breaches of his
contract.

In a statement, the club said: ``St Helens have announced the suspension of
Ian Millward from his position as head coach of the club pending
disciplinary proceedings.

``In the meantime the assistant coach Dave Rotheram will cover coaching
duties. The club will make no further comment until the conclusion of the
disciplinary process.''

It is understood the St Helens directors have become increasingly concerned
over Millward's recent behaviour during matches and he has twice been the
subject of official Rugby Football League investigations.

A fortnight ago he was fined £100 for being on the touchline during a
Cup-tie at Huddersfield, but no further action was taken over allegations
that he swore at an official.

The League's disciplinary commissioner is also currently undertaking an
inquiry into Millward's behaviour during a Super League game with Bradford
on Easter Monday.

Maybe you'd like Tony Rea to rejoin Dave Rotheram? He's usually pretty
emotionless-looking at matches.

I wonder if Hull would have the bottle to appoint a coach who wears his
emotions on his sleeve (think that's the impression) and who might actually
be able to motivate the FC squad.

I rate Millward and I can't say he's ever done anything to make me dislike
him. Wonder how many SL clubs wouldn't relish having him as head coach -
not many I suspect.

Have to say I'm quite concerned about the people running St.Helens.
Naturally you can see the point to their reasoning, but something tells me
that unless they wanted to get rid of the coach they would defend his
actions and smokescreen it as much as possible.

I dont get St.Helens. Several times they just got rid of winning coaches -
what is the issue here?

I can understand the players' situation. If Millward does go then they will
have to work for any replacement, and it's in their best interests to stay
quiet.

However, if Millward were Hull's coach and in this situation I suspect the
fans would be up in arms.

This is all reminiscent of the row which blew up in '99 when Ellery Hanley
publicly critisized the Saints directors, who reacted by suspending him. The
radio phone-ins were awash with Saints fans threatening to stay away if
Ellery was not re-instated. He was re-instated, and at the press conferance
called to announce the verdict, he made an unfortunate - if accurate -
comment. He said, "We've brushed it under the carpet". As we now know, a few
months later, he was fired following his non-appearance at the launch of the
new Super League season. If Ian Millward does survive this situation, I fear
The Board will be constantly looking for ways to remove him. The Saints
Board have a history of interfering with the running of the team. It's not
that long ago they selected it, and decided which players should play in
which positions; also who should be bought and sold: remember Nicholl, Dwyer
and Laughlin. I think the real reason behind this attempt to oust Ian
Millward, is that they believe he has become too powerful and is threatening
their authority.

The Saints Board are already guilty of grossly under-estimating> the support for Millward.>
Next decision they have to make is whether to call the fans`> "bluff" of "Millward goes, we all go".>
Mind you they`re probably getting ready to ban all last> night`s supporters who continually chanted> "He only said F*ck off">

Latest reports say that it is not the whole Board but just the Chief
Exec and the Chairman. It looks like Saints ability to tear the club
apart is about to surface once more.

Millward's a gonner, if he tries to fight his case the saints board
are going to tell him where to go - his only recourse then is to take
them to a tribunal to try and get some compensation out of them.

Which is why he asked for an appeal - its all part of the tribunal
process so he knew the game was up before he got the verdict. Even
Hanley's said he had to go, and if Ellery says that's what has to
happen then he goes.

Who's jobs on the line for him to snatch, do you think? Or will he
shoot off back to Oz?

The only one I can think of would be Endacott in all honesty ... but I
think it's more likely he's just going to fly back home once he's
finished trying to get some compensation (if he tries to).

I think if he had done such a thing, there would be no doubt that the board
would have him arrested and sent to jail. Their hilarious "swearing" reason
for the sacking makes you think there is more to it than what they have
published - like they want something hidden, but I get the feeling they
would gladly use anything they could against Millward, especially something
like that.

Given that the whole thing was a whitewash and that Millward himself
publicly defended himself and his family from 'one particular nasty rumour',
I would think they were started by those who wished to get rid of him in the
first place, Dougy Hoyle's best mate, Eamon McManus.
