Sonny Bill Williams and the IRB

Dechucka 6 August 2008 11:39:14
Don't give a rats what he does but I was interested in a comment from a RL
official ( don't know if he was from SBW's club or the NRL ) that the IRB
should intervene and stop him playing Rugby in France as he is breaching his
RL contract. Does anyone know if the IRB has the power to do this? Surely
they can't interfere in who can play in a domestic competition or can they?

I do wonder if the lad has been overly pampered since joining
league at what, sixteen ?.
Why is it that both union and league do not insist on their
pro players getting an education in their time off ?
Or would that be too taxing on the players ?

Well I'm pretty sure the NZ S14 franchises insist on a program of
professional development. the Hurricanes definitely do. the choices are
varied, as they should be due to the different preferences and capabilities
of the players. Can't remember how many hours a week are devoted to this but
they at least recognise the issue.

cheers, aMtt

The guy is a monster. As big and as fast as Jerry Collins and equally
lethal on attack and defence.
There is absolutely no question about his physical capability, the
only question is, and it's the same question that plagues all
crossovers, is his ability to adapt to a new game. You don't get time

With Gregan, Mehrtens, and Umaga to show him the rope, at least he's
in good hands.

He'll need it, the guy is a supreme sportsman but a total munter. He could
do with a few years under Robbie Deans at the Crusaders. Oh wait...

Think the NRL are stupid spouting all the things they are going to do to
Sonny Bill. He has left the country and they are powerless. I'm sure
though if they want to push it Sonny Bill can hurt the Bulldogs more thn
they can hurt him. The charges against players dropped against Bulldogs
players in a pack rape case becaus they closed ranks. I'm sure if Sonny
Bill decided to offer testimony from France which might lead to a number
of players being gaoled the dogs would suddenly change their mind about
trying to get him back in the country.
Er, he was one of the suspects. Not really much chance of him owning up to
that one.

Well you are talking about Sonny Bill who has been blessed with tonnes of
physical
skills but at the cost of grey matter

An acquaintance of mine once nearly lost his S12 contract for failing to
properly complete his uni studies, as specified in the "life plan" clause
of his then contract. MacQueen was very big on things like that at the
Brumbies.

Had a rocket put under him. Got back on the rails. Finished his degree.
Became a Wallaby.

Good try but no cigar.

I haven't had a beer with said player since he went to Ulster some years

But once in a while I do spot Joe at a favoured watering hole. :-)

I just figured it was because his wife did her Honours thesis with us

Joe's dad is principal at a local school here and the family often pop
into the Eltham Friendly Inn for a feed and an ale on a Sunday arvo, so I
do spot him with them when he's in town.

My other mate started his degree, and his rugby, here in '93, but finished
it off in Canberra. One of two Wallabies to have played for our humble
little club.

The NRL pricks are a disgrace - someone gives them 1/3 of their life,
they shaft him out of state of origin and now want to apply a
restraint of trade.

There is probably scope to look at the original contract of a 16 yr
old as well

How about "the consideration includes the right to the player's

duration of the contract period, to the exclusion of any other

to the effect of settling the buy-out figure - I'd suggest 50% of the
remaining value of the contract. Then any other organisation doing the
poaching can be sued by the club,

Why doesn't the club just sue the player?

I know that many of the Chiefs S14 players are completing a Diploma in

Is that how they managed to lose to Northland?

Not at all. This game represents postponed achievement. The management team
should take ownership of this and buy-in to results-driven performance
analysis thereby making a credible commitment to the concept of total
quality rugby. Lauaki's introduction to the game was a negative change
catalyst, reinforcing the pre-existing suboptimal strategy. I'm confident a
postgame gap analysis combined with mindshare will facilitate a paradigm
shift towards enhancing future actualisation. Or something like that.

No, if he was then Waikato would be on a journey, employing life coaches,
and the players would be earning diplomas in homeopathy and transcendental

I always thought it was because we had pictures of Banjo Patterson
fucking a goat, copies of which are given to each succeeding PM of
both NZ and Australia to keep the borders open...

Wrong Australia has always had a proud tradition of letting the less
unfortunates and the refugees from poor economic conditions into our fine
country. In fact we are now using New Zealand as a staging post for
immigrants from other countries who first go to NZ and than at the first
opportunity come to Australia, NZ is becoming the Ellis Island for
Australia.

Because we're LEGALLY allowed to come here and raise the IQ, class and
sexiness of your country.
In fact, you practically BEG us to come here, such is your desperate
thirst for enlightenment and sophistication.

I always thought it was because we had pictures of Banjo Patterson
fucking a goat, copies of which are given to each succeeding PM of
both NZ and Australia to keep the borders open...
Wrong Australia has always had a proud tradition of letting the less
unfortunates and the refugees from poor economic conditions into our fine
country. In fact we are now using New Zealand as a staging post for
immigrants from other countries who first go to NZ and than at the first
opportunity come to Australia, NZ is becoming the Ellis Island for
Australia.

I hear it is now a prereq for Kiwis to bring their own water supply now.

Jesus Chucky, that's the dumbest question you have ever asked.
