Who cares. The IRB world rankings are irrelevant.
-Is that sarcasm?
I take it you are aware that the IRB world rankings have been screwed by doubling the points earned during the world cup, the competition LEAST accurate at measuring ability.
See Ross Finlayson's or Myk's Cameron's excellent and accurate international ratings.
"New Zealand return to the number one spot in the latest IRB World Rankings following their 19-8 defeat of world champions South Africa in the opening Tri Nations 2008 fixture in Wellington on Saturday. This was so important to some after the RWC."
Now NZ restored to it's rightful place in the world. IRB - We can't have SA winning the RWC and NZ still being the top ranked team? That would lessen the importance of the RWC. Ah I know - lets double the points to falsely make it look as though SA is the best team in the world (until they meet NZ again)

This has been a public service announcement for those of you who don't
know what a 'fanboy' is.
Seriously Simon, as someone with an edumacation, can you offer a better explanation? I've tried and that's about the only theory that sticks. There is no statistical justification for the weightings. It is pure marketing guff
IIRC the last RWC never had weightings, this RWC NZ was so far in front that it would've been known that NZ would probably lose, and still be #1, so a solution was needed. Looks like a rat, smells like a rat...
