Interminably, in truth, and much of it self-serving shite. But this time he
has truly let the feline out of the rucksack in respect of the lengths to
which he will go.

Speaking of the woefulness of Oz scrummaging, the Bloodblister said: "We've
got to find the big, strong men to populate the front row and it's no good
saying we don't have them in our genetic make-up. If we don't have them,
we've got to find them or make them."

Another newspaper article on the same page spelled out the "find" strategy,
viz. raping the highveldt.

The "make" strategy, however, looks like a grand opportunity for ex-BALCO
sports physicians and pharmacologists who do not have a current gig...

Should that runners up spot have ended up being (say) Georgia or
Uruguay, are they STILL just "losers"?

Like you say, depends on the context. England might feel rather pleased
with themselves for finishing second and not seventh.

Just understand that to we arrogant wanker New Zealanders, second feels
just as bad as sixteenth. There is no middle ground, only winning and
losing.

To Georgia, one win in the pool is success beyond their wildest dreams.

But joking apart, what is your point, really? Do you seriously believe
finishing as runner-up in the WC is no different from finishing 4th or
5th? And does being a "less experienced loser" in some way reflect
positively on NZ'ers in your opinion? Do you honestly believe the
results of the English rugby team reflects on us? It's just that you
don't usually troll, and this looks suspiciously like a really, really
bad troll. Definitely no lap of honour for you.

You have to look at it from a New Zealand point of view, Richard.

We go into every rugby event expecting to win. Whether we come second or
third in the tri-nations doesn't matter; it's just a loss. Even in the
world cup, which we know is a lottery, it doesn't matter whether we come
second, third, fourth or eighth, it's just a loss.

Anything other than a win is a loss, and the details are of academic
interest only.

If you ignore the fact that there's less money around then it's good news
for club and provincial rugby, from which comes the real strength of NZ
rugby.

Still a few weeks for the provinces to comment on the draft report.
Nothing finalised until the mid-September meeting of the NZRU but I
reckon they're heading in the right direction.

But, it was the team that went awol. Tindall said they spent virtually

They should not need to be coached to know how to attack. I've seen
kids spontaneously pull off scissor movements, run for the gap, slip
inside passes, call for the ball. The English backs don't know HOW to
do these things, so they blame the coaches. It's ridiculous.
I remember being a few years after my "prime time" (e.g early twenties
and touring europe catching drunken Aussie girls) and meeting Kiwis with
a rugby ball. What you say is true. They could chuck the ball around
faster than my eye could see (ok, not so fast - my eyes that is). The
difference between the "youngsters" in NZ and in the UK is
amazing. It's the coaching. In the UK its still too much "pass the ball
down the line" as opposed to a bit more "spot the gap, take the
gap". Steady there Manure. Look at what Ireland began to be, and what
Wales are becoming. Why? Kiwi coach. Let the ball do the work in the air
between safe pairs of hands.
But this is the sort of coaching that is ingrained over a lifetime,
isn't it? John Hill's whining about the England coaching is off-base
as skills like these are not lost and acquired during the interval
between the premiership and a tour to NZ.
These are two different matters. Englands coaching problems are probably
due to a total lack of respect for the coaches by the players. Fords
defensive strategy is archaic compared to most GP clubs, Wells doesnt
seem to get on with anybody else in the setup at the moment, and
everybody knows what the players think of Squeeky. So the players try
and follow a gameplan that they know will not suffice against the best,
and revert to their respective club types when things go horribly wrong.
The other issue here is that the inate skills are not learned at an
early age. Since all our SH brethren believe that English rugby would
die without our public schools, I can only say that they hinder its
development more than anything else. Although my experience is dated, I
was at one of Englands finer ones in the 70s, it does, I beleive,
largely hold true today. The school put out about 12 teams to play
against various other schools at the different age groups, and probably
required 10 people to coach these teams. Where did these 'coaches' come
from? They were out history/geography/chemistry teachers and they
coached hockey, cricket or rowing at other times of the year. Whilst a
few had a real interest in coaching one of these sports, an ability to
coach was not part of their training, and many coached because there was
no one else to do it. When towards the end of my tile there, a teacher
arrived who was playing first team for one of the major clubs, there was
a positive change, but he happily admitted that he didnt know how to coach.
Also, my experience of playing in various clubs with people from very
different backgrouns during the 80s makes me think that this situation
was certainly generalised at the time, and I doubt that it has changed
much either.
You make an interesting post, but you should realise that rugby
players in NZ come from the school system too, and our school teams
are coached by regular teachers too. The 1st XV at my school was
coached by mome other than Graham Henry. In fact there is no such
thing as a professional coach until you get to representative level.

And there you have it all. I did expect that to be the reply, but ALL
your teachers are bathed in the rugby culture whereas only a few of ours
are.

2008 Tipping...rd 18 RESULTS Gordon Murray 20:31:59
 Phew!

Had to be out all day today, and only got back home late.

Had no idea about today`s games, until I saw the results.

Struth! What is it about Castleford and "big" teams? They`ve
beaten Leeds and Saints, and now they go and draw with Wigan
thereby ensuring none of us got any points out of that game...
which just about sums up this round. A helluva lot of tipsters
managed to end up on "nil points", and even Joe Average,
who has had a great season so far, scored minus one

Undoubtedly this week`s ***Tipster of t'Week** is

BILL L

who scored a fantastic 13 points, and zooms up 11 places
in the Ladder, into 4th place, ensuring that I am the meat
in the L family sandwich!

The only other tipsters to get into double figures were Glynnie
on 12 pts, and John Charnock on 10

Meanwhile, Ladder-leader-Lloyd made the most of a poor
round, to extend his lead at the top.

Never mind.....maybe next week will be easier! :-)

 Aaaargh!

Major disaster....laptop crashed an hour ago

I seem to have lost all access to Microsoft Excel which is where
WirralSaint`s very handy spreadsheet lies.

I`d entered all tips up till half-four and fortunately made a draft of
the summary for all tips in up till then

So I can post that summary for the time being.

WirralSaint not being available, I`ll have to revert to my previous
method of handling the tips (paper and pencil)...after going back
and copying all tips again
