 3 of the 4 best shows on network tv (excepting only "24") this year were
on ABC--and two of them were rookies. This is the one-season biggest
turnaround, in both ratings and quality (IMNSHO) ever. And I know, because
I've watched more tv than you have.
However, 2 of their 3 season finales sucked megadonkey. Only "Desperate
Housewives" got it right; they laid out the facts of the Dana's Toychest
mystery, and the only cliffhanger is who's gonna live thru it. The subplots
received similar treatment, and the audience was treated with respect.
So I had high hopes for "Lost" and "Alias". Alias did its usual great job
of setting up next year's problems, but this season's turned out to be
useless. Two different Brand New Evil Geniuses pretending to be better Evil
Geniuses from previous seasons, and the big weapon was The Virus From Night
Of The Living Dead. ugggg.
Then there's Lost. As I'd feared all along, they were so interested in
dragging things out to next year that they neglected to resolve ANYTHING.
The producers and their flacks were flatout lying in their recent
interviews, but even if you forget those the audience was totally
disrespected. The Mysterious Monster remained invisible, the Mysterious
Hatch was shown to contain *gasp* a ladder; no explanation for the presence
of Mysterious Other People was even attempted; and the only relevant
explanation for the many Mysterious Number Coincidences was Locke's rambling
about Fate and Destiny (which were tautological and useless, but I won't get
into that).
Yes, many of the backstories of the castaways were well-done and moving.
The best thing about the show was the tension between the unrealistic parts
(the polar bear, Ethan, etc.) and the very realistic interactions of the
very human castaways. But toward the end of the season, even that began to
breakdown. Example: there's zero chance the ten-year-old boy would have
been allowed to be part of the raft's crew. NONE. It was only done to set
up his kidnapping. This season's logic was sacrificed to set up next year's
mystery. booooooooooo.
