I'd been aware of Usenet since the end of 1994/beginning of 1995, but the only groups I read and to which I posted were music newsgroups, with the occasional comic book group thrown in for good measure.
I didn't start watching wrestling until 1999, and a friend of mine clued me to sites like (the old) Wrestleline and Rantsylvania. I figured there had to be a wrestling NG, so I probably just did a search for "wrestling" in the subscriptions, found RSPW, and here we are. I lurked and made the occasional post under other names before settling on "curious."
For some reason, the 1st post I really remember (more for the title, I think) was "Dave Taylor Shooted on Chris Adams!" and it was actually a holdover after most of the thread had expired, so all that was left was flaming of some kind, IIRC. Imagine that!

I got back into wrestling right at the start of the NWO angle. Started watching all the shows and the PPVs and such after not having watched wrestling since about 1990. I missed a PPV beause I was out of town and was looking around for websites to find out what happened. Couldn't find the information I was looking for so I tried usenet (I had previously been posting/lurking in like the 3dfx newsgroup). Found RSPW and lurked for a couple of years mostly until I decided to start occasionally posting.

To answer this, I would have to reveal my original identity on RSPW...

We're adding a little something to this month's sales contest. As you all know, first prize is a Cadillac Eldorado. Anybody want to see second prize? Second prize is a set of steak knives. Third prize is you're fired.
My first year of college, back in 2001, a friend had tried to get me into alt.2600. He was an ICS (computer nerd) major. I typed 'wrestling' into the outlook express search for groups and found this place. Posted as foolonthenet then came up through the ranks to be JD864 on teh dub. So yeah... good times

I honestly don't remember for certain, but I *think* I had stumbled across RSPW from a BBS account I had that carried some Usenet groups, along with FIDONet, which is where I was most active at the time (this would have been around 1995, and there were still a lot of us BBSers at that time who were kind of holding out against the Internet).
What I remember for sure is that, whether it was prior experience on RSPW that sent me there, or what, at some point I stumbled across something called the RSPW Online Museum, which had a bunch of information that I'd never seen before, and pointed to this newsgroup. I lurked off and on for months before my first post in early December of 1996.

Was there an RSPW Online Museum? I seem to remember finding an online wrestling museum type website that had RSPW linked.
After asking one of the computer geeks in my class how to access newsgroups, I was hooked.

I found RSPW using my college internet account in 95. I was using a LYNX text browser, and searched for 'pro wrestling' on yahoo. RSPW was the last link on the list, and I started reading it in the browser. I never really figured out how to use TIN to access the group, but I lurked anyway for about two years before I started using AOL in 97, when I started posting here.

I loved TIN. That's what we used at Emory. What I liked was that if there was a new post in a thread, the thread would reappear, or otherwise just be gone. Reading messages was so fast; there was no read to scroll and scroll and scroll.
I've using TRN before, and I hated it. What I use now is good in that it has the tree format, so things are much more linear.
I've tried using X-News, and I hated it, too. All I really want is a good free newsreader that allows me to activate EL PLONKO as necessary.

I don't know about this "X-News", but Xnews has this wonderful feature called "Hard Kill" that can be turned off and on at will using Shift-Crtl- K. With Hard Kill off, you can read groups normally, yet see your idiot filter still at work with red X's & scores of -9999.
