Since when did these two start "talking" with each other?
Reading an article on the Xbox vs the PS3, and I stumble across this passage...
"Xbox 360, however, drops the bomb on the PS3 in a few categories as well. It's HD Media Center Extender experience will blow away anything Sony can dredge up for digital media, and will support live and recorded HDTV over your home network. Its device connectivity--including direct support for Apple iPod and Sony PSP devices--is top notch. And the hugely compelling Xbox Live service gets even better with Xbox 360. Sony has nothing like it."

Direct support for iPod? Whaaaa?
That's not an article, that's a fanboy making statements on information he doesn't have.

Let's see... there was obviously no editing in this article, and no editor with any scruples would allow an, at best, unverifiable statement to be printed. Just because it comes from a linked Google News site doesn't make it news.
"and will support live and recorded HDTV over your home network."
Yes, if you have a direct line of sight connection from your wireless router or a direct gigabit ethernet connection, then you might have a shot. Other than that, you're screwed.
"Its device connectivity--including direct support for Apple iPod and Sony PSP devices--is top notch. And the hugely compelling Xbox Live service gets even better with Xbox 360."
Direct support for the iPod = USB or firewire support. PSP = Wireless.
Notice no mention of Sony's Bluetooth support, which will may allow people to download images and video straight from their cell phones to the system for trading and sharing.
"Sony has nothing like it."
Really? And how would the reporter know this? Does he have a magic fairy wand to fly invisibly into the Sony software labs?
A buddy of mine works for Richard Garriott's company and is working on the engine for a new MMORPG for the next gen systems. Got to talk to him the other day, and he told me that the PS3 is definitely going to be more powerful, and he's worries about the 360's ability to do 4x anti-aliasing on anything larger than a standard television because of the size of its framebuffer. He said that Microsoft did a better job with the dev kits as far as APIs and the like were concerned, and that the Cell dev kits are running Linux.

If this were true, it would indeed signal the apocalypse.

It wouldn't surprise me. Apple's priority with the iPod is that it becomes the ubiquitous portable media player, and if that means sleeping with the enemy it's a small price to pay. MS have been working heavily with Creative Labs on portable Media Center stuff, and iRiver etc. build devices that will work with *anything*. If Apple want to keep up with "the Windows market", they have to make some sacrifices.
That said, I doubt Sony are directly allowing MS access to make the PSP interoperate with the Xbox360. I read somewhere MS are rigging it so you can either upload un-DRMed MP3 files from the iPod to the Xbox360 HD, or stream through the Xbox into your home theater system. I don't see anything about "iTunes for Xbox" that would imply you can actually fill your iPod from the MS machine.

I bet you're right. I bet it'll just be streaming your music from your iPod to your Xbox.
I dunno, I still think that'll rule somewhat. It just adds one more thing that pushes people over the edge...they're really pushing those added value things. Those things that make you go, "oh yeah, that's one more thing it does".
I notice none of this has anything to do with gameplay. Should I be worried about that? As a consumer? Jack of all Trades, master of none?

What you should be worried about is how it only runs on 9Gb dual layer DVDs, while the Sony will play 50Gb discs. What this will end up meaning in a few years is either - Xbox360 ports lag noticeably behind the PS3 in terms of added content, or multiple game discs for the MS machine.

Google News will turn up Meltzer if you search right. That says it all ;)

You don't need Gigabit for HD video. HDTV at broadcast data rates is 19.4 megabits per second, compressed to XVID or WMV9 around half that. 100Mbit/sec Ethernet is fine, even 54g wireless will do.

Sony has yet to announce anything of the sort. Doesn't mean they aren't working on it.

The Xbox has 10mb RAM physically on the chip, and shares 512mb RAM with the CPU. The PS3 has less than 1mb on-chip, but of its 512mb RAM 256mb is video-only, with the other 256mb shared. In the days of $20 for a 512Mb DIMM I don't see why the memory allocated to either is so low - 512mb video and 512mb system would add very little to the cost of the machines.
Xbox Video will do fine, about equal to the PS3. What concerns me is the storage media.
