I find your lack of Whodini disturbing.

I debated them for several minutes before I posted this, along with
Mantronix and Kool Moe Dee.

Of COURSE I'm saying something about 3rd BASS. 2nd best white rap group
ever. MC Serch is vastly underrated.

Roxanne Shante was no MC Lyte, that's for sure.

i disagree... rap got its radio start in the early eighties... with the genre being
25 years old (radio wise) i dont see anything wrong with pre 90 being considered
old school... especially since most rap careers last for less than 3 albums...
and if not pre 90 at least pre 88...

Matt's being literal>
"Old-School" is (to some of us anyway) a specific reference to the era> that preceded Run-DMC.>
That's how I've always used it, at least when applied to hip-hop

In 2005, however, the term "Old-School" I believe pre-dates anything before
MC Hammer and Vanilla Ice (i.e. the commercialization and corporatization of
Rap Music, or, more specifically, when white people en mass started enjoying
it.)

Since it was never officially redefined, I'll stick to the original> (correct) definition.

I'm wondering who (maybe?) would have the authority to "re-define" a term
that encompasses an era of music that had no set-in-stone beginning or end.

Nothing beats this site I was on once, describing anything produced by
Primo, Pete Rock or Large Pro as 'Old School'.

the thing is, back in 86 or 87 people started referring to the first wave of
hiphop as old school and rightfully so... but it is almost twenty years later
now and old school can easily be classified as anything 80's hiphop...

im not going to argue the point because people get mad nuts about
original or non original hiphop terms...

I'm saying that it DOES have a set in stone beginning and end.

According to your own personal definition. Other people have other
viewpoints.

Check the back of the first two PE albums>

The reason I don't think the timelime should slide, is because it's as> much a reference to the timeframe (75-83 or thereabouts) as it is to a> fairly distinctive sound.

i can agree with that but the problem is that hiphop at that time had a very
limited audience... and to define the first three years (radio play) of its existence
as old school limits its definition too much imo... im guessing it is all relative
to a time frame... you see it as what the heads from back in the day see it...

problem is, hiphop is so much bigger than that now...

I always considered it as"being "before everyone and everything became
mother fuckers and all women became bitches and hoes"..

Therefore the early too shorts , nwa, and 2 live would still be old
school.. but their 2nd lps weren't.. Gutter Rap was the end of old
school... right when all the rappers wanted to get "street cred" and
"Keep it real".. by cussing and talking about shooting someone.. gone
were the days of "basketball" , five minutes of funk, rock box, and
other non profanity or violence laced raps.

I only remember him on their "This Is An E.P. Release" on "Same Song"
for the movie "Nothing But Trouble."

I dont htink anyone would have a problem with you calling 85-89 stuff
"old hiphop" it's just the SCHOOL bit that is a problem. I dont see the
need to use the term old school for later stuff, its not like there
arent lots of other words you could use.

i dont care what they call it to be honest... im not big on titles and classification...
i always hated the term gangsta rap... because 90% of the rappers who did that
music werent gangstas... pranksta would probably be a better definition...

The term "studio gangstas" was the term back in the day.

the term can be used for them now... cassidy, fabolous, ja rule, jay-z,
pac, biggie, lil wayne, slim thug, and i could go on all day long...

just cause you street served some crack a few times dont make you
a gangsta... more than anything it makes you a moron...
