[OT][MOVIE] Hack-Man saw Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, The (2005) (no spoilers)
Hack-Man 30 April 2005 02:16:53
Just got back from "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" (thought about going to a midnight showing last night but didn't want to deal with all the geeks wearing bathrobes and carrying towels).
It was a lot better than I originally feared when I heard "Hollywood is making a HGttG movie" (I had images of them adding a "cute little kid and a dog").
I really only had three complaints:
1) Most of the lines I had already heard/read a thousand times from the books, TV series, and video game (never listened to the radio series). I realize this is probably the case with any movie based on a book, and no--it wouldn't have been as funny if they had left them out, so this complaint is small.
2) There were some funny lines from the books/TV show that I was expecting--but they left them out. Yes, I realize this goes against my first complaint.
3) The casting. I take back my pre-viewing comment about casting a rap artist (Mos Def) instead of an actual actor. After seeing the movie, he is as legitimate of an actor as anyone else in the film. Still, something just doesn't seem "right" about having a tall Ford Prefect, a short Arthur Dent, a Trillian that isn't blonde and acting ditzy, etc.
I actually liked the casting for Zaphod. I still would have put Steven Wright as the voice of Marvin, though.
I was slightly disappointed that they didn't go with the same configuration for Zaphod's second head.
I didn't have any problem with the new characters that were added, or the new plot elements that weren't in the original(s).
It's weird that Trillian (supposedly a Brit) would pronounce Z as "zee" yet aliens would pronounce it as "zed".
All in all, I gave it an "8" on IMDB's 1-10 scale and a 0.783 on my zero to one scale. Quite refreshing compared to the last 20 or so movies I've seen (most of which I rated as less than 0.500).

Just got back from the first showing here (with my towel, of course) and it was good, bordering on great. My only nit (very small one, not worth blowing out of proportion) was Marvin occasinally sounding perturbed rather than manically depressed.
I read a thread here somewhere that the original Marvin & Arthur were going to be in it, and I only saw Marvin.

Simon Jones (who played Arthur Dent in all prior audio/video versions) had a cameo (credited as "Ghostly Image").
I assume it was the face that the Heart of Gold morphed into at the end of the film.

Or that could have been Douglas Adams' face. They looked a lot alike near the end of Doug's life, so I could believe it was either of them. FWIW, IMDB's trivia lists that as Doug's face, but I thought Doug's face was supposed to be on a planet (which I also must have missed).

He was pretty good in that movie with Marky Mark where they track down Edward Norton who ripped them all off.
"I HAD A BAD EXPERIENCE."

Which is why I wrote "acting ditzy" instead of "ditzy". Duh...

Sandra Dickinson. Since then, she's had bit parts in Superman III, Supergirl: The Movie, Space Truckers, Balto, and a bunch of voices on Teletubbies.

Thanks. She kind of reminded me of one of the Tillys.
