[OT](Poll) Next Major Media Organization to make up a news story?

Hmph! 30 May 2005 06:40:42
After Newsweek was found to be 100% wrong on the Koran/Toilet story, which
news organization will be the next to make up a majorly false story?

I say CNN is the next to be caught making up news.

Sadly, they have almost the same accuracy as the rest of the media.

It won't cause you any physical harm to acknowledge reality and accept that
Newsweek was wrong.

The guy who made the allegation has said it never happend. Why do you
continue to refuse to accept it.

The STORY was that Americans at Gitmo were desecrating the Islamic holy> book. The toilet story was one illustrative example of that> desecration.>
While the SPECIFIC INCIDENT alleged has not been proven to have> occured, the GENERAL ALLEGATION has in fact been confirmed by the> Pentagon. At least 13 credible allegations of "mishandling" by> American guards and interrogators.>

No, 13 allegations have been made. Five allegations of "Koran mishandling"
have been deemed 'credible', three of which have been deemed 'intentional'.
Of these 'credible' incidents, we have been informed that they include a
Koran being accidently dropped, a Koran being placed on a television, and a
Koran being placed too near food.

The Newsweek story stated that the toilet incident was CONFIRMED in a
government document. That was false. There has yet to be a single account
of "Koran abuse" or "Koran desicration" being deemed 'credible'. The
Newsweek story stated otherwise and stated that a government document proved
that such incidents had occured. None of these things have been proven
accurate. The facts have actually proven such occurances to be false. No
amount of wishful thinking is going to change that fact.

In the future you should actually try to read past the headlines before you
argue current events.

The story? Or the specific act? Notice the difference between what he> says and what you imply. Not the same.>

The story was false. The specific act never occured. He says that the
Newsweek story, which claimed that government documents confirmed that the
Koran was desicrated, was right. That is not a factual statement. We have
a document which confirms the Koran was "mishandled". The examples given
could in no reasonable way be considered "desicration".
You take it on faith that Newsweek's 'anonomous, who never seen such> > documents but thought he might have heard something similar to that,

not even 50% accurate for a story that they print as being true?>
You ask me as if I care. Yet you dodged answering my question.>

Because you attempted to defend Newsweek for relying on a source which never
presented itself a accurate. The 'anonomous, who never seen such documents
but thought he might have heard something similar to that, source' was on
which you seem to defend as acceptable for a legitimate news source.

"failed to back up my post"?>
What does that even mean?>

It means that:

"The STORY was that Americans at Gitmo were desecrating the Islamic holy
book. The toilet story was one illustrative example of that
desecration.

While the SPECIFIC INCIDENT alleged has not been proven to have
occured, the GENERAL ALLEGATION has in fact been confirmed by the
Pentagon. At least 13 credible allegations of "mishandling" by
American guards and interrogators."

Was proven to be false by every report that has came out since the story.
There were no "credible" "desecrations" and only FIVE confirmed
"mishandlings" of the Koran. No "GENERAL ALLEGATION" from the Newsweek
story has been confirmed.

The Newsweek Story stated that a government document confirmed that the
toilet flushing incident had in fact occured. That has been found to be
false. The mishandling has only been reported to have been intentional in
three instances (which have been punished). The instances of "mishandling"
have included a Koran being accidently dropped, a Koran being placed on a
television, and a Koran being placed too close to food.

Your post includes quite a bit of misinformation which you have not included
any factual backing for.

That was one instance of the Koran being "mishandled" accidentaly. The
purposeful accounts were:

The Koran was placed on a television.

The Koran was placed too close to food.

Yeas they did. The friggen Newy York Times even acknowledges that fact (
http://www.nytimes.com/2005/05/26/politics/26koran.html?ex=1274760000&en=dec53a3139a42ae0&ei=5090&partner=rssuserland&emc=rss)

Newsweek however has removed the article from their website. The closest
thing we have is an instance of an inmate throwing a Koran on or near a
toilet ( http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7937016/site/newsweek/ ).

You are wrong. If you want to argue the merits of the prison in Cuba you
should do so.

Again, no it didn't. You haven't read the article. It most certainly> does NOT say that.

But if it did, it would be 100% accurate, since a government document
does, indeed, confirm that the toilet flushing incident had in fact
occurred.

Granted, I'm told that a later document insists that it didn't occur and
the claimant had reneged on his claim, but then torture and coercion seem
to be a way of life down in GTMO, and there are literally hundreds of
instances throughout the recently released documents showing where people
said anything their captors wanted to hear in order to stop the
torture...which is, of course, why nobody uses torture anymore, because
it produces unreliable results.

The really hard stuff can be found at
http://www.aclu.org/torturefoia/released/052505/

And an overview, along with thousands of pages of other government
documents relative to the ritual abuse of prisoners in GTMO - including
the deliberate use and mistreatment and desecration of the Koran as a
means of psychological warfare - can be found
http://action.aclu.org/site/PageServer?pagename=torturefoia

Not that, you know, I'd want to back up my post or anything.

No it isn't, as I've repeatedly pointed out in this thread. I mean, I can
post scans of the original government documents if you'd like, but that
would be kinda redundant since the ACLU already *has* scans of the original
government documents posted on *their* site...

Actually, I just read the article in its entirety. It says no such thing.>
Dude, you haven't even read the article.>

Actually:

"May 9 issue - Investigators probing interrogation abuses at the U.S.
detention center at Guantanamo Bay have confirmed some infractions alleged
in internal FBI e-mails that surfaced late last year. Among the previously
unreported cases, sources tell NEWSWEEK: interrogators, in an attempt to
rattle suspects, flushed a Qur'an down a toilet and led a detainee around
with a collar and dog leash. "

So yes, Newsweek stated that the toilet flushing was "confirmed" when in
fact it wasn't. All non Koran desicration allegations have not been
confirmed and considering the source (anonymous, and not having seen any
actual documents), you have nothing more than conjecture to base your
arguement on.

Both not even in the article. You're wrong. No mention of "desecration" (the
word doesn't even appear in the article) nor was it "confirmed to have
happened in a government document".

So you lied. You didn't even read the article. Discussion over.

The fact that you feel the idea that "the Jews" are behind this has any
merit proves to me that you are nothing more than another delusional,
paranoid, moronic, anti-Semite. I had believed that you might actually be
worth discussing issues with. I was obviously very wrong on that point.

"Well, it starts with at the top. If you're the secretary of defense and
you're responsible for that. If you're responsible for that planning and
that execution on the ground. If you've assumed responsibility for the other
elements, non-military, non-security, political, economic, social and
everything else, then you bear responsibility," says Zinni. "Certainly those
in your ranks that foisted this strategy on us that is flawed. Certainly
they ought to be gone and replaced."

Zinni is talking about a group of policymakers within the administration
known as "the neo-conservatives" who saw the invasion of Iraq as a way to
stabilize American interests in the region and strengthen the position of
Israel. They include Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz; Undersecretary
of Defense Douglas Feith; Former Defense Policy Board member Richard Perle;
National Security Council member Eliot Abrams; and Vice President Cheney's
chief of staff, Lewis "Scooter" Libby. "

Check page two of the article:

"Though complaints about the handling of the Koran were routine, the former
interrogator said, the situation eventually escalated. "It was two things
that brought the desecration issue to a higher level," the former
interrogator said. "The rumor spread among detainees that a Koran had been
flushed down a toilet and that some interrogators brought Korans to the
interrogation sessions and stood on them, kicked them around." The former
interrogator had not witnessed those occurrences."
