Schiavo Parents' decent into insanity

C The Shocker 27 March 2005 04:45:48
 http://www.cnn.com/2005/LAW/03/25/schiavo/index.html

After the federal panel's decision Friday night, the Schindlers appealed to
Florida Gov. Jeb Bush to intervene, calling what happened "judicial
homicide."
"Governor Bush, you have the power to save my daughter," Mary Schindler
said. "Please, please do something."

Schiavo's father was more forceful.

"[Bush] has put Terri through a week of hell and our family through a week
of hell by not acting," Bob Schindler said. "He has to come up to the
plate."

-------

Never thought I'd feel sorry for Jeb Bush, but he's really fucked right now.
Legally, his hands are tied, he can't do ANYTHING, but the fundy Christian
wackos seem to think he's Emperor of Florida, and has the power to do
anything he wants... and the fact that he isn't doing what THEY want means
he's against them in their minds.

Hey, the fundies saw Jeb break the law to give his brother FL in 2000 -
surely he could do the same to save a vegetable, right?

What a horrible situation. I feel so sorry for the parents - they're
desperate to save their daughter even though there's no hope of her ever
recovering, and they're going the "ugly" way about it with the public
desperation appeals to the President etc.

I even feel sorry for the authorities; their hands are tied by law,
they're being blamed by the right for not overstepping their boundaries
and decried by the left for making half-hearted attempts to change the law.

Terry Schiavo's husband is not a monster - he's just about 10 years
ahead of her parents in terms of acceptance of her situation.

Agreed. Rush Limbaugh was saying something yesterday of how can the> left get to send troops after Elian Gonzales and Bush won't go in to> save Terry.... the "Emperor of Florida" argument. Jeb and co. are> getting fire from both sides.>

First off, Stefan's Law. You lose. Second, apples and oranges. Elian
wasn't even in the country legally. His family refused to give him up
even after his father asked for him back. If Terri's parents took her
from the hospital and hid her out then it would be the government's
responsibility to get her back to the hospital with force if necessary.

That's his call. What I can't understand is, if h is going to move on,> why drag the whole country into this giant fight?

That was not him. That was her parents. Again -- what fucking planet
do you live on?

They're not horrible to a person who doesn't even know what is going
on. All she can do is some basic motor functions and basic necessary
life functions no more than a worm can do. She isn't aware of anything
not even hunger or pain. The only people feeling any sensations from her
not having a feeding tube plugged in are the people who love her.

As I understand it, it's more than she doesn't know what's going on -
she can't feel, she can't think, she has less brain function than your
average household pet. Everything that made her what she was as a person
is long gone, with unfortunately just enough brain function left to keep
her breathing.

I think what it comes down to is ultimately a spiritual issue - people
seem to think that her "soul" is still in there, they can't accept that
a human body can still be breathing but to all intents and purposes
brain dead. If religion is an issue, there are two ways you can approach
it: firstly, that her soul has gone to heaven a long time ago and it's
cruel to keep her empty shell alive. The alternative is that her soul is
trapped inside a body it can never control again, and to set her free is
a tragic kindness. Either way, her parents will never have their little
girl back no matter how hard they fight in the courts. They're looking
for a magic bullet to make everything better when they should be letting
her go.

This one.

PPOR!

Why didn't you read my post?>

I did. You have everything backwards. Completely. And still do. This
isn't even a "right vs left" thing. This is "inability to understand
basic facts" type of thing.

Um, they didn't want to remove the tube. They did not start the battle.> And it is his call to walk away, his and only his, and it is the> parents' if they want to stay. They don't want to take his right to his> call, but he wants to take theirs, and hers, and anyone else's.

Um, completely wrong assessment. The reason they went to court was to
find out whose call it was to make. The courts determined it was the
husband's. So, yes, they DO want to take that call away. They can walk
away and could have years ago but steadfastly refused even urging the
federal government to step in and change laws just for them. They were
the ones who brought the entire country in on this. Not him.

You really need to look at facts in the case before you start posting
and you're NOT going to find them on Rush, Savage, Hannity or any other
radio or television personality who is supposedly on "the right". AAMOF
the judge who first made the call and continues to stick to his guns is
a life-long religious Republican sticking to the laws of the state of
Florida. He knows a hell of a lot more about this case than anybody
involved because he is a neutral source willing to objectively look at
the facts and ruled numerous times based on that. Stop painting the
husband as the bad guy in this like some fucking douchebag because
that's what you heard on the radio when the only crime he committed in
this was loving his wife who will never recover but finding love again
well after he knew she would never recover.

But I guess I> had better not because whether we agree or not, whether I try to see or> argue Hey, I could understand if you had flamed a post of mine coming> only from the one side, but when I started trying to see it from the> other side, then I got creamed. Oh well.>

Because you didn't try to see it from the "roght to die" perspective.
You filtered it through the "It's horrible to kill somebody"
perspective. Is it a bad way to die? I'll answer with a question -- are
there any GOOD ways to die? The most humane is lethal injection but,
because she isn't a criminal, that would be more akin to assisted
suicide which is illegal in most states. I will argue along with anybody
that such methods should be legalized. But until that time comes you
stick with the law.
She isn't aware of anything> > not even hunger or pain. The only people feeling any sensations from> her> > not having a feeding tube plugged in are the people who love her.>
1. We cannot know that it is painless for her. If her eyes track> movement, or light, then the body can feel that stimuli, and pain is> the most basic. So there is no way to know that she feels no pain.> None. How could you claim to know, personally?>

I can't "personally" but it's in science books. The cerebral cortex
is responsible for receiving pain signals from the nerves. She is
totally unresponsive to any stimuli. This has been proven multiple times
over in the courts.
2. Yes, it is causing those who love her pain, and it seems that some> people enjoy seeing that very much, and revel in it. Academic argument,> I can see, but "HER PARENTS SUCK AND DESERVE TO SEE HER DIE BECAUSE OF> THAT" is a sentiment in so many, many posts.

I haven't seen a single post like that. All I have seen are post
saying they need to just let go and accept the fact that she will never
recover and allow her to die a natural death now. Her parents are tragic
because they refuse to accept that she will never recover.

It seems some people are> still so pissed over political losses in other battles that they are> transferring all that hatred to Schiavo and her parents rather than> using that cool scientific approach that they claim agrees with them.

Yes. It does seem that the people who share beliefs with the
controlling party of all three branches of the federal government yet
still complain of being "underrepresented" are using this case to prove
that the "liberals" and "activist judges" are "out of control". Look at
how you continue to do so.

The majority of the population in the US is siding with the 30 judges
who either ruled against the parents or passed on their appeal. Yet you
and your ilk of rightwing media pundit automatons continue to try to
make it about the elections. You are the only ones. What the President
and Congress do and the reactions invokes have nothing to do with
"political losses". They have to do with that population or any other
disagreeing with his actions. That's it. Accept it and stop being such a
fucking sore winner. Fucking move on from November 2 like 48% of the
voters already have.
