NEWS/OT: Telephone fuckups

Saif Budhraja 20 March 2005 20:57:12
In a story about Verizon screwing up telephone directory listings,
<http://www.detnews.com/2005/business/0503/19/biz-121799.htm>, there's
the following:

In the Richmond white pages, Verizon listed the number for St.
Mary's
Catholic Church's school instead of the one for the church. As a
result, school personnel were inundated with phone calls --
including
those of "a critical and confidential nature," the church wrote in
an
e-mail.

Perhaps I'm missing something, but if I call about a confidential
matter, I make sure I'm speaking with the person I need to speak with
before discussing the matter. Who starts talking about a confidential
matter, or anything else, without first establishing that they are
talking with the intended party?

In the world I grew up in, the following scene would take place:

Callee: Hello, St. Mary's School.
Caller: May I speak with Father Frank please?
Callee: I'm sorry, you have the wrong number. You need to call the
church office at 346-3588.

Evidently, the following scene is taking place instead:

Callee: Hello, St. Mary's School.
Caller: Oh my god. My husband just told me he's having an affair with
one of the alter boys. What should I do?
