Serious point about the Atlanta Courthouse debacle..

Logical Anomaly's Ego 12 March 2005 21:25:08
...setting aside all the arguments about Civil Liberties and being
"chained up" at trial....here is my problem.

THAT isn't to blame in this particular case as much as the idiots at
the Sheriff's Dept. As I understand it, going by what I saw of CNN
coverage...and admittedly my info could be wrong, so please correct
me.....They had ONE female deputy, armed a day AFTER they found shanks
on a 6ft 200lb former linebacker...WTF? Either you go full on Colin
Powell...deputies armed to the gills WITH triangulation...meaning he
can't get 2 feet without going down in a hail of bullets OR you don't
have ANY weapons at all...and you have a lock down outside the room
with weapons available at a seconds notice. Its an either or
propostion.....Dear God what idiots are running that show? Again, I
haven't been following minute by minute coverage so maybe I'm missing
something about their postioning. Of course, shackles would have
solved it completely, but besides that...the whole thing is absurd.

One attorney who had worked there in the courthouse had reccomended
multiple deputies to guard prisoners, trained in martial arts but
without firearms, as he had seen that work well in Japan. Supposedly
the courtroom was not as secure as some others (the guy was being held
in a room, not a cell, before being brought out) and the single deputy
thing was a problem considering the guy had been bringing in weapons
before. I guess the mistake was that a lot of what we consider security
to be in courts and so on is mental. You see a couple armed people in
uniform, you *assume* that if something breaks out large numbers of
same will come quickly. Unfortunately in this case, the suspect was
able to overcome one armed officer, commit murders and escape the
containment before reinforcements arrived in large number, then kill
another armed officer with the weapon obtained from the first. There
probably aren't many criminals who could do that, or who'd try it
instead of taking the chance in court.

But whatever the stuff said about how the guy was handled, the main
cause of all this is still that this was one nasty and motivated crook.
I'd expect they will review it for security procedures nationwide, like
the FBI looked at their training and weapons tactics after a shootout
in the 1980s where some agents were killed.

See <http://www.thegunzone.com/>

Especially the report at <http://www.thegunzone.com/11april86.html>

And <http://www.thegunzone.com/miami-ammo.html>

Another case where you had seriously motivated and dangerous criminals.

DEP

Lots of other stuff there, but the "Tactical Page" stuff is pretty
gross. The "Darwin Stuff" and "K9 bite" "Tough Way to Go" are not
good.. trust me on this.

When do you go work at the courthouse? When you're too stupid to work as
a street cop, but aren't quite stupid enough to be a mall security guard.
